Exodus Chapter 34: Starting Afresh
The Heavenly Father’s Invitation

GK611 Morning Devotion
Speaker: Ps Deborah
Date: March 27, 2025

I. The Father’s Invitation (Exodus 35:1-19))

1. Enter His Rest (v1-3)

Before the construction of the Tabernacle, this is the third time Moses gathered the whole congregation of Israel, emphasizing the importance of the Sabbath. God knew that in their natural zeal, the Israelites might sacrifice the Sabbath in order to build the Tabernacle. However, the purpose of building the Tabernacle was to testify that God dwells among His people, so that they may enter into His rest. If the builders refused to keep the Sabbath, they would miss the very purpose of the Tabernacle.

The establishment of the Sabbath is not only God’s grace and protection for His people but also a testimony of their obedience to God. True rest is not merely about stopping work or lying idle. Rest is about returning to God, being still before Him, drawing near to Him—allowing our body, soul, and spirit, our thoughts and values to be renewed and aligned with the Tree of Life. It is about building trust in God and enjoying satisfaction in His presence.

2. Bring an Offering (v4-19)

a) Offering of Gifts (v4-9)

Moses then conveyed God’s command to the Israelites: Whoever is willing, let them bring an offering to the Lord. The materials listed here are the same as those in chapter 25. The materials for building the Tabernacle had to be gathered according to God’s instructions.

If one‘s spiritual life is built on human wisdom, shallow knowledge, or fleeting emotions, when trials come, that faith will easily collapse. On the contrary, if one builds upon the materials God desires—truth, prayer, obedience, faith, and love—under the leading of the Holy Spirit and with godliness, then even in storms, they will stand firm, glorifying God and benefiting others.

b) Offering of Skills and Gifts (v10-19)

Our pastor‘s wife often says, “Without people, there is no ministry.” Indeed, the foundation of spiritual building is dedication—not only material offerings but also the offering of one’s gifts and talents.

God commanded the Israelites to build the Tabernacle, but it was not just about donating gold and silver; it was about how people used the gifts, wisdom, skills, and talents God gave them to accomplish His work.

God is inviting us to offer up our gifts, talents, and even our lives for His use, to build His Kingdom. Are you willing?

II. Our Response (Exodus 35:20-35)

1. Willing and Cheerful Offering (v21-24, 29)

In this passage, it is mentioned three times (v21, 22, 29) that the hearts of the Israelites were stirred, and both men and women willingly brought offerings of various materials.

After experiencing the utter failure of their spiritual trials and the great grace of God‘s forgiveness, the Israelites were refined to the point that they could willingly offer precious materials they could see to the unseen God. They were willing to give up what pleased them in order to gain God’s pleasure. This is a true offering of life.

We are grateful that GK brothers and sisters have been active in offering willingly. For instance, though the initial target was 20 tablets, 40 were eventually raised. Moreover, in blessing the community and visitation efforts, brothers and sisters offered their talents and time, hoping to pass on God‘s love to those in need.

2. Each One Contributing Their Part (v25-29)

In verses 25-29, different people contributed and used different gifts and talents. The women spun yarn and goat‘s hair; the leaders brought onyx stones and other precious gems. All the Israelites contributed according to their abilities to complete the work commanded by the Lord through Moses. What beautiful obedience and unity!

The building of the church does not depend only on financial giving; it requires brothers and sisters who are willing to offer their abilities, talents, and time for God‘s use, building up the body of Christ together.

As God leads GK to expand and build a larger sanctuary, what resources, talents, and skills can we offer to God? Are we participants, or merely bystanders?

III. God Begins to Build (Exodus 35:30-35)

When the Israelites willingly offered their gifts, skills, and talents, God called Bezalel and Aholiab through Moses. He personally chose them and filled them with the Holy Spirit, giving them wisdom, understanding, and skill.

When we realign ourselves with God, willingly offering ourselves and our treasures, God will move and raise up teams to fulfill His plans.

GK is about to expand and build a larger church. Are we prepared? Are our lives resting in God, willing to pay the price to dwell in His presence? Are we ready to dedicate ourselves to the work of building—not only through money but by entrusting ourselves to God?

Conclusion:

1. Enter God‘s rest — so that we may have the strength to offer our gifts and ourselves.

2. Willing and cheerful offering — whether material, talent, or time.

3. Desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit — so that we can not only work but also teach and build others.
