Exodus 20
God’s Law Man’s Protection

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel
1. The six-year covenant of slavery (V1-6)
In ancient times, some people sold themselves into slavery due to poverty or debt. But God’s law stipulates that the Hebrew servants must be free in the seventh year. God values human freedom and does not want anyone to be enslaved forever.
This also typifies God’s plan for our spiritual lives. He does not want us to remain bound by sin, fear, failure, or the bondage of the world, but wants to lead us into true freedom.
2. Special Protection Order for Female Slave (V7-11)
The law stipulates that if a woman is sold as a maid, the master who marries her as a wife must treat her well and protect her; if she fails to fulfil her responsibilities, she is free to leave, reflecting God's care for the disadvantaged.
God's law is not just a command, but an expression of love that ensures fairness and avoids exploitation. Today's society also needs justice and mercy. Whether in the workplace, family or church, we should practice God's will and become witnesses of justice and freedom.
1. Value every life (V12-14, 16)
This part of the law imposes severe penalties on serious crimes such as murder and human trafficking. God values life and emphasizes that no one should take away the life of others easily.
In society, when we encounter violence, bullying, etc., we should have the courage to stop or call the police. This is not only to protect ourselves, but also to maintain social justice.
2. Severe punishment for beating and scolding parents (V15, 17)
Beating and scolding parents violates the ten commandments of "honour your parents"!
God requires children to respect their parents and not to harm them with violence or words, because respect and order in the family are the foundation of social stability.
3. The true meaning of an eye for an eye (V18-27)
"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" is not revenge, but a fair compensation system to ensure that punishment is commensurate with the offense, to prevent abuse of violence, and to maintain social order.
God's law protects life while giving opportunity for repentance and reconciliation. Today, we should respect life, choose forgiveness in conflicts, not repay evil with evil, become peacemakers, and live out the likeness of Christ.
1. Owners are responsible if animals hurt people (V28-32)
This paragraph explains that when a domestic animal (such as a cow) causes harm, the owner is also responsible if the owner knows that the animal is ferocious and fails to control it.
Christians should be responsible people, not shirk responsibility or turn a blind eye to matters that have nothing to do with themselves.
2. Debts that harm others should be repaid (V33-36)
The law clearly stipulates that if someone else's property is damaged due to negligence, such as digging a pit and not covering it properly and causing someone else's cattle to be injured, compensation must be paid. This shows that in society, everyone should be responsible for their own faults and cannot put others in danger through negligence.
Summary:
God’s law teaches us that a sense of responsibility is the cornerstone of social harmony. Regardless of family, workplace or public sphere, everyone should be responsible for their own actions and maintain safety and trust with integrity.
God’s law is a ‘safety net’ that covers everything from personal freedom and life safety to property disputes. May we all find true protection in God’s law and move steadily toward God’s promised land!
