Exodus 18
God's Work and Wise Guidance

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella
God’s work not only influences those who believe in Him but also draws non-believers to Him.
1. Hearing of Miracles and Seeking the Truth (V1-6)
Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard of God’s wondrous deeds. Instead of merely being amazed, he took action—bringing Moses’ wife, Zipporah, and his two sons to meet Moses. This shows his interest in God’s work and his willingness to understand it more deeply.
2. Witnessing Miracles and Giving Glory to God (V7-12)
Jethro went from hearing about God’s deeds to personally listening to Moses' testimony. As a result, he came to believe that the Lord is greater than all gods. He expressed his faith through action by offering burnt offerings and sacrifices to God.
II. Delegating Leadership with Wisdom (Exodus 18:13-27)
1. Moses Bearing the Burden Alone (V13-16)
After leading the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses not only served as their leader but also as their sole judge. However, managing over two million people alone was overwhelming. Even though Moses was wise and had authority, his personal capacity was limited, making it impossible to govern the entire nation effectively.
2. Jethro’s Advice on Delegation (V17-23)
Jethro warned Moses that working alone would exhaust him and slow down the people's daily lives, leading to inefficiency and fatigue in the entire community.
He advised Moses to appoint leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens to handle minor disputes, while Moses would only focus on the most important and complex cases. This system would lighten Moses’ burden and make governance more efficient.
3. Moses Accepting the Advice (V24-27)
Moses followed his father-in-law’s advice and established a hierarchical system of governance. This not only reduced his burden but also improved the overall efficiency of leadership, ensuring that the people's needs were addressed more quickly. Most importantly, through this system, God’s laws and statutes were effectively communicated, allowing the Israelites to stay connected with God.
