Exodus 17
The Way to Victory in the Wilderness

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel

I. Lack of water and testing in the wilderness (Exodus 17:1-7)

1. The people’s complaints (V1-3, 7)

The Israelites had no water to drink in Rephidim, and they began to complain about Moses again. The complaints even escalated and directly questioned the presence of God. The Israelites had just passed through the Red Sea and God's miracle of sending manna. Their mood should have been one of joy and hope, but when faced with practical difficulties, they began to complain.

Do we often complain in difficult situations and forget God’s past grace and guidance? When we encounter problems, do we ask God for help, or do we complain?

2. Moses’ response (V4)

Faced with the complaints of the Israelites, Moses did not get angry but cried out to God. He knew that only God could solve the problem.

When we face complaints or accusations from others, like Moses, we should first cry out to God for guidance instead of counterattack.

3. God’s provision (V5-6)

After Moses heard the complaint, he went to ask God, and God instructed him to strike the rock, and water gushed out for the people to drink.

God’s response not only solved the immediate water shortage problem but also demonstrated God’s provision and faithfulness. In our seemingly difficult moments, God always has a solution, and He can bring us life out of any seemingly ‘hard’ place!

Summary:

When God allowed the Israelites to face the test of water shortage, He was teaching them to trust, not to complain! We often think that ‘there is no way’, but God has already prepared provision, but we have not turned to Him; faith is not established in good times but refined in the wilderness!

II. Attack and victory in the wilderness (Exodus 17:8-16)

1. Attack of the Amalekites (V8)

At that time, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites, compounding their predicament.

Just like the problems in our lives often catch us off guard, one after another, but God’s guidance does not stop. He teaches us how to face challenges together by faith and action.

2. Prayer and fighting go hand in hand (V9-13)

Moses asked Joshua to lead the army into battle, while he stood on the mountain and raised his staff in prayer. If Moses raised his hand, the Israelites would win; if Moses lowered his hand, the Israelites would lose. So Aaron and Hur supported Moses' hands until victory.

When we face challenges, in addition to relying on God, we also need the support of our peers. Prayer + Teamwork = Victory!

3. God is my banner (V14-16)

Finally, Moses obeyed God's command to record the victory and built an altar to remind the Israelites: The Lord is my banner! It is God who leads us to fight and win!

Every victory should not be regarded as just "solving the problem", but as a testimony of God's faithfulness; remind yourself: every difficulty is overcome because of God's guidance!

Conclusion: The wilderness is the training ground of life!

Although the wilderness is difficult, it is also a place where God exercises us. Whenever we face difficulties, remember: it is not to stop us, but to rely on God and live a victorious life!
