Exodus 16
Man is easily ungrateful, but God is always gracious

1. People are ungrateful and complain (V1-3)
It is easy for people to forget God’s grace in good times, but they quickly develop complaints in times of adversity. This chapter shows us that the Israelites had just experienced the power of God, leading them across the Red Sea, and not long after singing praises, their faith was swallowed up by hunger and the environment.
2. God hears resentment, but still shows mercy (V4-12)
What is touching is that although the Israelites continued to complain, God did not punish them immediately. Instead, God responded to their needs and thereby tested their faith and obedience.
1. God sends food, showing Father’s grace (V13-15)
"In the evening, quails came flying... In the morning, after the dew, there were small round substance like white frost on the field... This is the food the Lord gave you to eat." (Exodus 16:13-15) God not only provided manna, but also gave quails, so that the people could see God's presence and power.
2. If the measures are equal, everyone will be satisfied (V16-18)
The scriptures record in detail that God commanded the people to "gather according to each person's appetite." Those who collected more would have nothing left over, and those who collected less would have no shortage. This shows the accuracy and righteousness of God's supply. God’s supply is always sufficient and appropriate, as His grace shows time and time again; on the other hand, our complaining and greed will only cause us to lose our inner peace.
3. Hiding leftover food secretly, disobeying the Lord’s command (V19-30)
Although God through Moses set up clear regulations on collecting manna and observing the Sabbath, the people still repeatedly disobeyed God's command and even left the manna overnight out of greed, which resulted in vermin and stinking. God also specifically pointed out the significance of the Sabbath, reminding them to rely on God’s provision regularly. We must understand that God’s commands are for our own good. Only by obeying His arrangements can we truly enjoy His blessings and find rest. Allowing selfish desires and greed to do so will only deviate us from true rest.
The scripture describes the manna as “looking like coriander seeds, white in colour, and tasting like wafers mixed with honey.” God commanded Moses to fill an omer with manna as a remembrance so that future generations could see how God led the Israelites out of Egypt and gave them food even though they wandered in the wilderness for forty years.
This is a kind of inheritance, the inheritance of faith, and the inheritance of gratitude. We also need to leave some “manna” at home and in the church so that future generations can see God’s faithfulness.
