Exodus 13
Remember Salvation and Follow Firmly

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Daniel
1. The firstborn are consecrated to God (V1-2)
Consecrate the firstborn to God, whether of man or of beast. This was not just a ritual, but a reminder of how God saved their firstborn son from the tenth plague.
2. Passing on the salvation of Exodus from generation to generation (V3-10)
You must observe the great grace of being redeemed from Egypt by God and tell your son to “pass it on from generation to generation.” Remember forever that God brought you out of Egypt with a mighty hand and always meditate on and obey God’s words.
Summary:
When we remember God’s grace in the past, we can trust in what He will do in the future. Looking back on the road to salvation, God’s hand has never left us. We can rest assured that He will continue to lead and protect us and our families!
1. Dedication is a response to God’s salvation (V11-13)
The Israelites were slaves in Egypt, and Pharaoh refused to release them. God sent the tenth plague, which was to kill all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, including humans and animals. However, the Israelites were preserved by God because of the blood of the lamb, and their firstborn sons survived. Therefore, God commanded them that from now on, all their firstborns must be returned to God as a memorial to His great grace of redemption.
God required the Israelites to give the firstborn of their animals to Him. This was not only a material offering, but also a spiritual offering. They were to give their best to God, because God gave them his best.
2. Dedication is testimony to God’s faithfulness (V14-16)
God commanded the Israelites that whenever their children asked: Why do you do this? They will answer: The Lord brought us out of the house of slavery in Egypt with a mighty hand. (V14)
Summary:
Giving willingly is a natural response, because God redeems us, and our lives, families, property, time, and talents are all given by God. And dedication is not only a personal behaviour, but also the inheritance of faith. Every donation is an opportunity for future generations to see God’s faithfulness and learn gratitude and obedience.
1. God’s way is higher than man’s way (V17-19)
The Philistine land was the shortest road from Egypt to Canaan, but the powerful Philistines were stationed there. The Israelites had just emerged from slavery and had no combat experience. God knew that they might want to turn back if they encountered difficulties. The way God chose to lead them around the wilderness was not to punish, but to protect.
2. God’s presence leads day and night (V20-22)
God used a pillar of cloud to shield the Israelites from the heat during the day and to guide the Israelites; and at night, God used a pillar of fire to illuminate them and drive away darkness and fear. No matter day or night, God’s presence remains the same!
Summary:
In modern life, we often lose the way forward due to various temptations to 'turn back'. God teaches us to trust His guidance and to follow firmly even if the road is tortuous! Because safety and blessings are the most important!
Dear brothers and sisters, Exodus Chapter 13 is not only an ancient historical record, but also a mirror that reflects God’s grace in our lives, his requirements for dedication, and his guidance for moving forward.
