Deuteronomy 22: Live A Life of Love and Holiness

Speaker: Ps Daniel Kew

Introduction:

The various laws recorded in Deut. 22 were given by God to enable the children of Israel to live a life of love and holiness! For faith and life are connected and inseparable!

1. Love others as yourselves (V1-4)

God wanted His people to understand that all the countrymen of Israel were their brothers' families. Therefore, they were to love the lost things they saw as their own, and to help the brother until he found the lost things, so that he would not lose them. The concept of loving one's neighbour as oneself is clearly expressed here, and helping one another even if it costs them.
It will be a harmonious society when people will love others as themselves and will take the initiative to lend a helping hand to those in need.

2. Love for animals (V6-7)

God commanded His people to set the mother bird free, which is a protection of life, because the mother bird can continue to produce. God wants His people to care for nature, as well as to protect the source of food. In this way they can enjoy blessings and their days will be long.
We need to have a heart to love God's creation, because God also feeds it; therefore, we need to follow God's rules and not to kill everything, so that all life will live on and on!

3. Envisioning for people (V8)

The roofs of the Israelite houses were flat, and there were often activities on the roofs, or sunbathing, etc. Therefore, a fence had to be built around the roofs, so that no one would fall from the roofs. God requires His people to think of others and not to look after their own affairs alone.

4. Separate as holy (V5, 9-12)

(1) The difference between men and women (V5)

Here it speaks of the difference between what women and men wear, including clothing and other ornaments, as male and female. This law is directed against possible homosexuality and possibly some gender reversal in Gentile religious ceremonies. This is all an abomination to God, so Moses here reminds the people to know how to distinguish.

(2) Do not mix (V9-12)

The point of this passage is not to interfere! God brought the people out of slavery in Egypt so that they could be set apart and live in holiness and be a witness to the world!
Today, having been born again of Christ, we are to live holy in the small things of life!

5. Fidelity to marriage (V13-30)

(1) Keeping chastity (V13-21)

This passage states that if one is unfaithful, he shall be put to death; if he is faithful, the husband shall not mention divorce again. For if it is not in the bridal chamber, it is the sin of adultery, and God is very disgusted with the sin of adultery. Keeping chastity is not old-fashioned, but to protect true love and to protect oneself.

(2) No Adultery (V22-30)

God's law provides for the death of both men and women who commit adultery. Because adultery involves sexual sin and destroys strong marriages and families, it is not as harmless as the world might think.
God places great value on the faithfulness of the spouses in marriage, and the faithfulness of the spouses to each other symbolizes the faithfulness of the people to God, so there are very clear and strict regulations on the marriage relationship.

Conclusion:

Whether it is to love others as ourselves, to maintain a separate and holy life, or to be faithful in marriage, it is something we cannot fully do on our own. We need to rely on the Lord's help so that we can live a life pleasing to God on earth and live a life of love and holiness! To testify to the glory of a loving and holy God!
