Judges 7:Many are called, but few are chosen
GK611 Morning Devotion
05/01/2023
Speaker: Ps. Deborah + Rev. David Introduction: Many are called, but few are chosen
I. Squeeze into Gideon's Three Hundred (v1-8)
1. Not by sight (v1) Midian's army was as innumerable as locusts, and camels as numerous as the sand on the seashore. Today, Gideon responded to God’s call, and the first thing he did when he woke up in the morning was to lead his followers to camp against the Midianites. From this, we can see that Gideon bravely believed that he was chosen by God because Jehovah has given him 3 times of affirmations. Hence, no longer by sight, instead he faced the enemy bravely.
2. Do not exaggerate on your own (v2) God told Gideon that He could not deliver the Midianites into their hands. The reason was not that they were too few to defeat the Midianites. It is that there are too many people following him, lest they boast to God after victory, thinking that it is their own ability.
Humility without boasting is the quality of life we should have. The proud and arrogant will lose the battle because God resists the proud.
3. Not afraid, not timid (v3) God's next screening condition is that people who are afraid and timid can leave. The fear of timid people will affect the morale of the army, which has a critical impact on the victory or defeat of a battle. Remember when the 12 spies went to spy on the land of Canaan? When the 10 cowardly returned to report the bad news, the result brought to God's people was collapse in the wilderness.
While God was selecting the army, he was also testing Gideon's faith. With 32,000 people, it is not easy to deal with 135,000 people, and now God wants him to declare (publicly approve) that those who are afraid can go home. So for Gideon, this was a time when his faith was severely tested. But we see that Gideon simply obeyed and followed. As a result, more than two-thirds of the people really left. There are 10,000 people left. Will we trust God as Gideon did?
4. Not carnal (v4-8) There are two ways for soldiers to drink water. First, they have to take off their backpacks, part of their uniforms and weapons before they can kneel down and drink water with their mouths. This way of drinking water, delaying time, also easy to be attacked by the enemy. 2. In order to guard against the enemy, stand and drink water with your hands. Therefore, a person who holds water in his hands is not only a person who is always vigilant but also a person who is not carnal. (Not putting down backpacks, uniforms, and weapons for convenience and to be able to gulp water).
Those who have the opportunity to indulge but not indulge are those who have been dealt with by the cross. Gods can only use such people. What God values today is not the number of people, but the size of the church or how many congregations. What God values is how many mature Christians in the church can be used by the Lord.
II. The battle is won by God (v9-25)
If we squeeze into Gideon’s three hundred chosen by God, we must believe that God will lead us to overcome every battle in life. As can be seen in the following verses:
1. God's affirmation and faith (v9-11) 300 men against 135,000 Midianite troops who were constantly oppressing them. I think Gideon must have been anxious, struggling, and afraid when he looked at the densely populated places in the distance and the light from the torches in the Midian army camp. God cares for Gideon. He, therefore, commanded him to go down to the camp of Midian, and may also take Purah his servant to embolden him. Then let him hear the dream of a man with his own ears, to let him know with certainty that God has given the enemy into his hands to strengthen his courage.
True faith is given by God and established by God. Trust God that He will empathise with our struggles and worries when we simply respond to God the way Gideon did. He will affirm us in a way we can understand, strengthen our faith, and give us the courage to complete what we have been entrusted with.
2. God strategises, man follows (v15-22) When Gideon and the three hundred warriors stood in formation according to God's strategy, blowing the trumpet loudly and shouting "The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!", God began to move. Victory is guaranteed when man follows a God-given strategy to fight. Because God fights for us. Just like V21 Gideon, they only stood around the enemy camp and did not enter the battlefield. God caused the enemy army to confuse itself, and the whole camp ran wild, killing each other and fleeing.
3. Unity will prevail (v23-25) Then v23-25 The other tribes of the Israelites gathered from all over the earth and pursued the Midianites with unity. Then killed their two leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. There is no individual performance in the military. To win a battle, apart from absolutely obeying the orders of the leader, it is very important to fight with unity. Just like in the Tower of Babel incident, when everyone does one thing with unity, even things that are not in line with God’s will can be accomplished, not to mention that God has promised to hand over the enemy into their hands. So when the tribes of Israel gathered from all over the earth to strike down the enemy, it brought a great victory!
Conclusion: Rise Up and Respond to God
To be Gideon’s 300 of God, we must squeeze our way in. In 2023, we will no longer sit and wait for the cell leader to push us before moving but will automatically get up and respond to God. Encourage brothers and sisters, let us sacrifice willingly and offer ourselves! Become God's Gideon 300, constantly breakthrough in life, lead others to experience revival, and become a general who glorifies God and benefits others!
