Job 27 Hold fast to righteousness and keep on God’s grace

Introduction: Reap the consequences

1. Holding fast to righteousness and never relenting (v1-6)

Job said that even though God had not dealt with him justly and fairly, and had caused him sorrow in his heart, he still had to swear by God's name, "As long as my breath is in me, and the breath of God in my nostrils,Even if I can't understand why God has dealt with me in this way, my mouth will never speak a word that offends God, and my tongue will not speak deceitful words." It means that he still believed in God and did not give up his relationship with God.

(1) Job did not exchange grace with God as Satan claimed, and feared God because of the material abundance God gave him.

(2) He also did not accept the suggestion of his friends to confess his sins in order to gain back his blessings and deceive God with false repentance.

If we knew today that God would not change our difficulties, would we still hold fast to our integrity and righteousness toward God, to our relationship with Him, and not compromise with the world’s standards? Or would we exchange grace with God for the sake of wanting to gain favour?

Furthermore, Job did not sever his relationship with God even though he felt that God had taken away my reasoning and that the Almighty had grieved my heart. Continuing with this passage today, God also wants us to not give up on repairing any broken relationships with people.

2. Do not be wicked and cut yourself off from God’s favour (v7-23)

Job reminds his friends that if he is righteous, the fact that they malign, wrong and hurt him just proves that they are the wicked ones. Thus one would be creating his own curse and cutting off God's grace.

(1) God deprives the wicked of hope (v8-10)

The ungodly, even if they are temporarily benefited, have no hope when God comes to take their lives. Not only will he not ask God, but his prayers will not be heard.

(2) God’s portion for the wicked (v11-23)

(a) Though they have many descendants, they will quickly perish (v14-15)

The abundance of children and grandchildren is a symbol of man’s blessing. But the wicked, even though they have many children, are still killed, and those who have any left over to remain will have to starve. They are to be killed one after another. So fast that even the widows will not have time to lift up their mourning.

b) Assets are divided among the righteous (v16-17)

The wicked accumulate money like dust and sand, and clothes like piles, but no matter how well prepared they are, they are to be partaken of by the righteous.

The riches of this life are not to be our primary pursuit. We are to hold firmly to the Word of God, putting God before man and the earth. We are to be faithful stewards of what God has given us, and good stewards of His money.

c) Being afflicted and becoming the laughing stock of all (v20-23)

No matter how rich, influential or respected a person becomes, if he does evil and defies God or rejects Him, death will come as a flood, storm and east wind and sweep him away. To the ungodly, death is nothing but fear. When the wicked is judged in this way, men will clap their hands and he will be the laughing stock of all.

Conclusion: God is our righteousness

In the midst of disaster and persecution, no matter how much man slanders, even if God is silent, we still need to believe that God is our righteousness. We need to be careful about our comments. Avoid being like Job's 3 friends, who criticised assertions that eventually became a prison, causing themselves to lose the opportunity to be forgiven, to fall into the ranks of the wicked, and to lose God's grace.
