Jeremiah Chapter 51: Dreams with God—Breaking Away from the Waves of the World

Introduction: When the tide goes out…

1. Be careful not to resist God (V1-5)

Through Jeremiah Chapter 51, verse 1, Jehovah mentioned “Leb Kamai”, which means “the hearts of those who rise up against me,” directly pointing out Babylon’s arrogant attitude away from God. Leb Kamai was used by God to typify those forces that resist His will, which are the pride, power, and corruption of the world. When God determined to judge Babylon, He declared that no matter how powerful these forces were, they would not be able to oppose Him. Verses 3-4 mention that Babylon is about to be completely destroyed, and both the palace and the soldiers will fall. Even though Israel and Judah had sinned many times, God still did not abandon His people. His grace always flashed through them, showing that salvation was a sovereign grant of God.

2. Break away from the world and seek refuge in God (V6-10)

Babylon is described as an intoxicating “golden cup” (verse 7), symbolizing the prosperity and temptation of the world. It looks attractive on the outside, but is actually empty on the inside, making people fall into intoxication and eventually be swallowed up by it. God reminds His people to “flee quickly” (verse 6) because the end of this world is coming. God does not want His people to be lost in temporary pleasures. He wants them to seek His eternal glory.

3. Make every effort to aim at Almighty God (Jeremiah 51:11-33)

(1) God will avenge his temple (V11-14)

God’s declaration of vengeance for His house shows that He will not tolerate blasphemy and that His will shall be accomplished. Babylon was judged for destroying the temple of God.

(2) God is the only Creator (V15-19)

God created all things with all his wisdom and power. Although Babylon was dominant for a while, it was eventually destroyed by God because God did not give glory to idols.

(3) God can crush everything (V20-26)

God uses Babylon to impose judgment as “a hammer over the whole earth,” but Babylon itself will eventually be crushed because it “repays people according to their deeds.”

(4) Prosperity and destruction belong to God (V27-33)

The rise and fall of Babylon were controlled by God. Only when God controls all powers can His people be secure.

4. Let God avenge you (V34-37)

God saw how Babylon was oppressing His people, and He personally avenged them. God never ignores the suffering of His people. No matter how many evil forces suppress them, God will take action at the appropriate time to bring justice to them. The destruction of Babylon showed that God would not tolerate evil and that His justice would prevail.

5. Be careful not to indulge in the world (V38-44)

The end of Babylon is described here, and God will judge the enemies who devoured His inheritance. Jeremiah writes, "in their excitement" (V 39), foreshadowing Babylon's final indulgence and revelry before its imminent destruction. These kings and ministers indulged in pleasure, but ultimately ended up being “like lambs, like rams with male goats to the slaughter” (V 40). In modern life, we are often attracted by the "wave" around us, constantly chasing material comfort, reputation and social status. Many people neglect spiritual life because of social "trends" and even sacrifice long-term happiness for short-term happiness.

6. Be brave and trust in Jehovah (V45-53)

Verses 45-53 again call on the people to flee Babylon, and Jeremiah exhorts them: "lest your heart faint" and "do not stand still." This exhortation shows that we must be brave enough to trust God and quickly obey His leading as the world collapses, because Babylon will soon be judged and will no longer exist. God gave the people a special sign: when the enemies of Babylon "come to her from the north," it is time to "escaped the sword, get away! Do not stand still."

Conclusion: God’s righteous judgment and final victory (V54-64)

“Dream with God—Escape from the Waves of the World” reminds us to give up attachment and dependence on the world and choose to put our faith and hope entirely in God. The destruction of Babylon symbolizes the eventual collapse of all systems that do not fear God, and those who choose to walk with God and be loyal to Him will enter His eternal kingdom through faith.
