Introduction: Are you a Superman?
1. God’s servants will also face persecution
(1) Under attack, but do not bow our knees (V1-2)
Jeremiah preached the word of God in the temple, but he was persecuted by the priest Pashhur and was even beaten and imprisoned. His persecution came not only from external hostile forces, but also from the priests who were supposed to serve God. Pashhur turned away from his duty and bound Jeremiah in chains, keeping him in bondage for a whole day.
Today we will also encounter attacks from the devil, trying to make us bow down and stop standing up to serve God. But in moments like these, God’s power sets us free. Can we, like Jeremiah, choose not to bow our knees, but to turn our attention to God and trust in His salvation?
(2) Respond bravely in the face of persecution (V3-6)
Although Jeremiah suffered greatly, he still bravely declared God's judgment against Pashehur and changed his name to "Terror on every side." Pashhur was originally a symbol of "freedom and honour", but due to its disloyalty, it became a symbol of fear. When the world presses us, do we compromise, or do we, like Jeremiah, stand for God’s truth? Responding bravely and sticking to our faith is a sign of alignment with God. God is in control, and we can stand firm by faith.
2. Spiritual struggle, speak bravely but never give up
1) Although ridiculed, still loyal to God’s commission (V7-10)
Jeremiah felt that he had been deceived by God because his faithful preaching was met with great pain and ridicule. Even so, the vision and fire in his heart prevented him from being silent and he still preached the word of God. Serving God often comes with a price, and when hurt, our first reaction may be to give up. But Jeremiah chose to express his anger to God rather than turn away from his trust. This is a deep relationship between him and God, an expression of trust. We can also speak to God fearlessly in pain, and He will listen to our hearts.
(2) Although abandoned, believe in God’s presence (V11-13)
This passage mentions that those who persecuted Jeremiah were his compatriots, family, and friends. Facing their abandonment was the biggest blow to Jeremiah's soul. However, even in the midst of heavy rejection and loneliness, he still believed that God was with him and that God would fight for him. Today we may feel isolated and helpless in the face of ridicule or rejection from the world. But as long as we are loyal to God’s truth, God will be on our side and become our strong shield. His presence is the foundation of our faith.
(3) Although it is painful, complain to God without despair (V14-18)
At the bottom of his life, Jeremiah poured out his heart to God and even began to curse his own birth. This seemed to be a sign of despair. But the Bible records all of this to show that God allows us to express our truest emotions to Him. Even if circumstances do not change immediately, we do not have to suppress ourselves and can tell God everything we want. Relying on and talking to God is our salvation in the low points.
Conclusion: Don’t be a superman, be a real person
God does not require us to be strong and flawless forever. He wants us to be honest with Him, not pretend to be perfect. True freedom lies in surrendering everything to God and relying on His strength to walk through every moment of weakness. Every weakness is an opportunity for God to show his power.
