Jeremiah 19: Don't Become a Shattered Pot
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah

1.Cherishing God's Warnings (V1-5)

God instructed Jeremiah to buy a potter's jar and lead the elders and priests to the gate of the Valley of Hinnom to proclaim God's judgment. This served as a warning of destruction for committing acts detested by God.

When the Holy Spirit reminds us to repent, let us cherish every warning from God.

2.Choosing to Avoid Judgment (V6-9)

When God is absent from our plans, or our schemes are not aligned with His will, He will cause them to fail. The scripture shows that where the Israelites abandoned God, He would judge them in those very places.

When we place other people, things, or matters above God, He often allows us to experience failure in those areas. Therefore, we must stay vigilant, quickly return to God, and allow Him to uproot, tear down, and destroy the idols in our lives. Let us fear God and avoid the judgment of being shattered like a pot.

3. Becoming a Valuable Vessel (V10-15)

a. Away from Lowliness and Avoiding Being a Shattered Pot (V10-11a)

God's original intent was for Israel to be a valuable vessel, a light to the Gentiles, and a witness for Him. However, they were stiff-necked and refused to repent. God commanded Jeremiah to smash the pot in front of the people and the elders, symbolizing how God would smash this rebellious nation. Even Jerusalem would become desolate, beyond repair or becoming whole again. The only fate of a worthless vessel is to be smashed.

Brothers and sisters, we are all chosen by God to be His valuable vessels. May God help us break away from lowliness. During these 15 days of fasting and prayer before the Jewish New Year, let us prepare ourselves to be valuable vessels in God's hands through Bible study, meditating on His word, and confessing our sins.

b.Repent Quickly to Avoid Eternal Death (V11b-13)

In today's 15 verses, "Topheth" is mentioned five times. In certain prophecies and apocalyptic literature, Topheth symbolizes, in the Last Judgement, the eternal destination of destruction and punishment for sinful and rebellious people. It is also known as the lake of fire in hell.

Christians do not have to face the lake of fire as the final destination. So, when someone points out areas in our life that need correction, even if it's harsh, don't resent them. When the pulpit shares messages about judgment and repentance, don't block your ears. When you realize there's something wrong in your life, repent and turn back quickly. Always be prepared to meet the Lord without fear.

c. Obeying God to Become a Valuable Vessel (V14-15)

The scripture mentions again that the people will be smashed like a pot because of their stubborn refusal to listen to God's words. Let us take this as a lesson. Beyond living a repentant life, we must also obey God's will, follow His guidance, and become valuable vessels used by Him.

Conclusion:

•Live a life of repentance and obedience to God, and avoid becoming a smashed pot.
•Strive to pursue a closer relationship with God, be renewed to become His valuable vessel, and live a life that glorifies Him.
