Isaiah 56: Citizenship of God’s Kingdom
GK611 Morning Devotion
17/8/2022
Speaker: Asher Chang + Rev David Tan

Introduction:

Recently, I heard from fellow workers that they have received an allowance from the Singapore government, the GST Voucher. I was not surprised to hear this news but did not have this right as I am not yet a Singaporean citizen. But today, you and I can become citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, and with citizenship, we can enjoy God's promise of a passport to enter the Kingdom of Heaven! 1. Keep justice and do righteousness (V1-2) (1) As judgement approaches (V1) From the previous chapters God has continually called the people to do justice and keep God's covenant. And God has shown His unfailing love. God has shown that His comfort and salvation is unconditional and that people need only to "come, come, come" and "listen, listen, listen" in order to receive salvation freely.

Here again God reiterates that His standard of righteousness has not been lowered. While the people are still stubborn and far from righteousness in their hearts, God will bring His righteousness near. God's "salvation" and "righteousness" are inseparable. The promise of salvation is "to do justice and to do righteousness", and we are a freely given covenant people who should live what is right in the eyes of God.

(2) Be Blessed V2

"Keeping the Sabbath" shows that man acknowledges God as his creator and redeemer. It pleases God that we are absolutely obedient in all things, following His will. In Mark 2:27, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. God created the Sabbath so that man might have rest; similarly God did not give the law to bind man, but so that we might be blessed according to God's will.

2. Keep God’s Covenant and Receive Citizenship

(1) God's Chosen People (V3a / 6-8)

Do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord Speak, saying, “The Lord has utterly separated me from His people”; Those who are united with the LORD are those who have heard the gospel, accepted Jesus' salvation, and participated in God's banquet. Those who are united with the LORD are those who love Him with all their heart, soul, and strength, serve Him, and keep the covenant of God.V6 He will give us citizenship in the kingdom of God, so that we may enter His holy mountain and enter the house of God. Moreover, our burnt offerings and peace offerings are well accepted V7.

(2) God willing to write off V 3b-5 / 8

In the past, the law stipulated that “An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter the assembly of the Lord;” (Deut. 23:3) because they resisted God, but in the future they would be accepted by God as well. Today God will not only gather the scattered Israelites, but “He will also gather others into them.

A “eunuch” is a person who is unable to bear children and has a defective life. In the past, God’s law stipulated that “He who is emasculated by crushing or mutilation shall not enter the assembly of the Lord” (Deut. 23:1), because their lives were withered; but in the future they will be accepted by God, so that “the eunuch should not say, I am a dry tree” V3.

No matter how it was in the past, even if God has shown that such a person is not accepted and such a thing is not allowed. But God is able to undo all this past as long as one has a turned back heart.

It is not our past that God values, but our willingness to turn back now. If we keep God’s law, do what is pleasing to Him, and keep His covenant, He will bless us more than we can imagine, and He will give us an everlasting name that cannot be cut off. V5

3. To go one’s own way and lose citizenship V 9-12

(1). The defaulting caretaker V 9-10

The watchmen are the leaders of the people, whose responsibility is to protect God’s people from the enemy.

But a blind leader can neither distinguish between good and evil, nor can he see the dangers facing the people. He who does not dare to speak out for the truth, lacks responsibility, and is lazy does not enter the kingdom of God, and is devoured.

(2). The shepherds who go their own way V11-12

"They all look to their own way, Every one for his own gain, From his own territory. God is not pleased with leaders who look out for themselves and not for the flock. A leader who is drunk today is like a person who has no vision and no calling, who is just muddling through each day, and who cannot enter the kingdom of God. Although they are leaders, they have no part in the kingdom of God.

Conclusion: You and I can be citizens of the Kingdom of God!

We are to love Him with:
1. loving Him with all our heart, soul and strength
2. serve Him
3. keeping the covenant of God
4. becoming responsible watchmen
5. being a rising shepherd

The above conditions are added to the renunciation of earthly citizenship in order to apply for citizenship into the Kingdom of God. God has given us the name of an eternal remembrance of God, and has promised that we will never be cut off.
