Introduction: Everything happens for a reason, and everything that happens for a reason has an effect
When you do something, when you choose to do something, you should expect the result of doing it, and you should take the responsibility of doing it. It is like planting a tree, how to sow it, how to fertilise it, and when the tree grows, you can see how the tree will look like. And what that tree looks like depends on how we sow it, which is what we call “reaping what we sow”.
Israel had been redeemed by God and belonged to Him, but now they forgot all about His salvation and turned away from Him, even turning back to Egypt.
1. Betrayed You and became chaff (v1-3)
Once upon a time the tribe of Ephraim had been promised to become many tribes, and God had promised that they would become the largest and most influential tribe. But when they began to serve Baal, they were cut off from God and became spiritually dead and dry. It did not matter how blessed and glorious they had once been. As soon as one worships idols and betrays God, the end is to be changed from high places to nothing, like clouds, manna, chaff and smoke, which cannot last long; to leave God is like leaving His protecting hand, and one goes quickly to perdition.
As we move on, let us take heed in all things, not to preserve our position, but to ensure that our relationship with God remains close.
2. Forgetting You and losing Your protection (v4-8)
The Lord was the God of Israel's salvation, but one day He turned into a mother bear who lost her cubs and wanted to kill them. God is the Lion of Judah, who came to deliver, but has now become the destroyer of the people. We all need to be aware of the fact that when God gives man enough and a high position, man becomes proud and forgets God and leaves Him, and in the end the Saviour becomes a beast, going from being protected to being chased.
Complacency is as destructive today as it was in Hosea's day. Are we conscious of the constant need for God's presence and help? We all need to learn to lean on God in good times as well as in bad. If we are now well on our way, do not forget who gave you this prosperity; do not rely on your own talents, but in all things remember the God who gave them to us!
3. Without You, the nation was lost (V9-13)
The Israelites preferred to seek other gods, to seek the help of the Gentiles, to use many tricks, diplomacy, and even to sacrifice their faith and moral principles, but always failed to seek God. The fact that they fell into such distress was the result of their departure from God. God had sent prophets to warn them many times, and had spoken to them many times, but they refused to listen: they thought they knew, but did not know that they did not know.
Without God, there is less wisdom, and it is easier to make the wrong decisions, and the country goes into ruin more quickly. Today, we need to think about our relationship with God. Have we often made the wrong decisions recently? If so, we need to seek God immediately and not become unaware of the circumstances in which we were unaware of what situation that we were in.
4. Losing you and eventually becoming dry (V14-16)
It is a process from fruitfulness to dryness; like a fish that leaves the water it does not necessarily die immediately, but it dies slowly. When we go from fullness to commonness, we must begin to watch out, for then is to become dry. When we find that the wind of the Spirit has changed, we must rise up and seek God.
Conclusion: I am yours, I am no one else’s!
Let us give our hearts to God alone, for we have no other God than you. Ask God to help us to see our relationship with Him as greater than the wealth of our achievements. We worship the LORD God as our only Lord, because we belong to Him.
