2 Samuel 7 Stay close to God’s heart and think of the things that concern God
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah Tan
Introduction: Thoughtful Child
There is a young single mother who takes care of her mother-in-law and her children. It's tough, but she has no complaints. One day, the mom casually mentioned to her daughter that the company hadn't paid her yet, so she had to spend wisely. Little did she know that when she returned home that night, dragging her tired body, her daughter had taken all the money out of her piggy bank and shoved it into her hand, saying, "Mom, this is all for you, don't worry."
Looking at such a sweet, understanding child, the mother's heart warm, moved to tears. The fatigue of the day suddenly disappeared, and she held the child tightly in her arms, eager to give the child all that she had and all that was best for her.
1. When you are mindful of the things of God (v1-7)
(1) Stay close to God's heart and think about building a temple for God (v1-2)
While David was sitting in his palace with the king's palace completed, the country secure and at ease, and sitting in his own palace, he thought of ark of God but it was still in the tabernacle, and therefore wanted to build a temple for God to dwell in.
People generally think of God in the midst of hardship and danger, but when they come to peace, they are estranged from God. It is not difficult to notice this simply from the fact that during the pandemic and now, God's children are not interested in coming to worship and meetings. When the pandemic opened up, many were thinking about their own needs, their own families. But David's heart was with God, thinking about God's things. Brothers and sisters, are we also attentive to God's heart?
(2) Though unsupportive but deeply moved (v3-7)
Nathan felt that David's idea was a good one, and that God was with David. So he said, Do whatever you want. But that night, God said to Nathan that He did not want David to build a temple for Him.
What man thinks is good is not necessarily what God wants. The only way to fulfill what God wants is to do it according to God's will, and the result will satisfy God's heart.
Although God did not support David's idea of building a temple for Him, He was deeply moved by David's thoughtfulness. David just had the idea of building a temple for God and spoke the word, and God was responsive. v5-16, God then used 12 words for Nathan to communicate the series of blessings He wanted to give to David and his descendants.
When we are mindful of God's business and attentive to His heart, God not only remembers, but God is eager to give us all the benefits.
2. God will think of matters that concern you (v8-17)
David was deeply pleased with God because he had God's things in mind. v8-17, God unilaterally took the initiative to make an eternal 'Covenant with David' . In this 'Covenant with David' God gave a minimum of 10+ promises to David and his descendants. These include:
1. to be chosen to be king, 2. to have the presence of God, 3. to cut off all enemies, 4. to have a great name, 5. to look after his people, 6. to live in peace and prosperity, 7. to cultivate and enhance life, 8. to be free from enemies, 9. to build up a family, 10. to have an inheritance, 11. to be in a father-and-son relationship with God, 12. to be disciplined with grace, and 13. to establish a firm family and a kingdom for all eternity.
What is special about the Covenant with David is that it is an eternal covenant that God took the initiative to make with David. And it is a covenant that has absolutely no conditions attached to it, and God is personally responsible for it till the end. And this Covenant with David is fully fulfilled through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and is passed on to everyone who accepts Christ as Lord, which is you and me.
3. The Key to the Fulfillment of God's Promises (v18-27)
(1) Obedience and acknowledging only God (v18-23)
David was well aware of his own insignificance. From being a humble, forgotten shepherd boy, to sitting on the throne today, enjoying peace and prosperity, David knew that it was all due to God's grace. God's immense favour and goodness not only made David unable to express his gratitude to God in words, but it also made David realised that God was the only One for him (v22 For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You).
We have been exploring the Tree of Life and the Heartified Ten Commandments these past few months. Pastor's sharing on Sunday led to reclaiming the first commandment of the Ten Commandments from the perspective of love. God is the one and only, loving me, my Creator, my Heavenly Father. The Father established the Commandments to protect us and not to let us be harmed in any way. Let's get serious about responding to God again and let Him truly be the only One for us, there is no God but You.
(2) Blessing the descendants according to God's promise (v25-29)
God promised David to build him a family and bless his descendants. David then interceded and blessed his descendants using what God had said as his prayer.
Quite often our prayers are not accomplished because we pray according to what we want. But if we pray according to God's promises, they will be accomplished. Because God is faithful, He will not contradict with what He has said.
Conclusion: Thinking about the things that concern God
In the face of such a great blessing from God, David was still eager to repay God's grace in action. So he did not stop at God saying that he could not build the temple. David actively prepared money and materials and everything needed for his son to build the temple. So when Solomon came to the throne, he was blessed to build on the foundation his father had already laid.
Whether we are cell group leaders, workplace leaders, or pastors, co-workers, let us keep the things of God's house in mind. Our faith, our love for God, and God's commission to the church should not stop at this generation. Just as David prepared for Solomon, let us also prepare for the kingdom of God, so that the next generation can step on our shoulders and continue to build upwards. Pray that God will raise up more Davidic hearted Josephs to enter into the many doors that God will open for us in the year 5784.
