2 Samuel 3 God is in control of everything
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Stella Ling
Introduction:
One thing David knew very well was that the Lord himself had chosen and anointed him king. Therefore, the Lord would take full responsibility and bring him into this destiny. Therefore, no matter what man's calculations and plans may be, we know that God is in control.
1. The Rise of the House of David (v1-5)
We see that the house of David was growing in strength. He was king in Hebron for seven years and six months, and he had six sons. His house was prospering, and he had the blessing of the Lord and the presence of the Lord.
2. The fall of Saul's Household (v6-21)
(1) The Weakness of Ishbosheth (v7-8, 11)
It was the custom at that time for the latter king to inherit the concubines of the former king. Therefore, the possession of Saul's concubine by Abner was not only a moral issue, but also a threat to the throne. When Ishbosheth pointed out that Abner l was in possession of Saul's concubines, Abner is very angry. The reaction of Ishbosheth also shows that he was only a puppet king. It is clear that at that time, Abner's position in the nation of Israel was far above that of Ishbosheth.
(2) The power of Abner (v9-21)
The fact that "hat Abner was strengthening his hold on the house of Saul." (3:6b) shows that although Ishbosheth was the king of the ten tribes of Israel in the Northern Kingdom, it was actually the marshal, Abner, who was in power behind the scenes. When Ishbosheth pointed out to his face what he was not, Abner retorted with strong, vulgar words, showing no respect for the king at all, and began to change his ways to make a covenant with David.
3. The Slaying of Abner (v22-32)
(1) Joab's Revenge (v22-27)
Joab righteously accused David of making a covenant with Abner Ostensibly, he was doing it for David's good, but in reality it was out of a personal vendetta between himself and Abner. Joab then tricked and killed Abner in a hole in the city gate. Though, Joab killed Abner out of favoritism, he did save David from being caught up in becoming Abner's puppet king.
(2) David shows innocence (v28-39)
a. David curses Joab (v28-29)
Joab had backstabbed and murdered Abner, not only to avenge his brother's death, but also to remove a potential threat to his own position as marshal. Here we see that Joab was completely self-centered and had no regard for David. He would have killed Abner without discussing it with David. This was very disrespectful of authority and a threat to David's good name. Therefore, David's curse on Joab's family was severe, and Joab suffered the curse solely because of himself.
b. Lift up a lament for Abner (v31-39)
To show that he was totally uninvolved in the matter, David lifted up a mourning for Abner by burying him in the capital city of Hebron. Then, he composed a song of mourning for Abner. And, fasted for a whole day in honour of Abner. All of these actions would convince Israel that the killing of the son of Ner, Abner was not at the will of King David, and eliminate the hostility of the eleven northern tribes.
Conclusion:
We see God's hand reigning in this, God blocked the plan of Abner to avoid David becoming a puppet king, and made David the king of Israel in His own way.
Brothers and sisters, may we all know our destiny well and trust God Himself to lead us into our destiny. For God is in control of everything!
