Introduction: The Great Mother's Love

1. Declaration in Faith (22:1-4)

David, who had fought many battles and had countless enemies, never explicitly stated that Saul was his enemy. It is true, however, that David's servants regarded Saul as an enemy. So (1v) unreservedly lists Saul as one of his enemies. Others might include domestic bandits, foreign neighbours, Saul's descendants, etc. David's repeated rescues from God in battle turned perilous situations, causing him to sing songs of thanksgiving. The entire psalm is tied to God's deliverance.

The proclamation of this passage expresses the psalmist's knowledge of God, with six descriptions of the LORD is mine - “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.

He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior from violent people you save me.

David continued to experience and know God in the midst of one difficulty after another; similarly, our experiences in the wilderness of life can transform "God" from a remote and abstract concept into a "living God" whom "I trust". The more we experience in the wilderness, the deeper our experience of God becomes, the more we can see God as "to be praised", and the more confident we are to "ask" Him and believe in Him.

2. Testimony of God's Works (22:5-31)

(1) A Cry in Emergency (V5-7)

The psalmist uses the metaphors of waves, cords, and snares to illustrate that he was so deeply entangled in the shadow and power of death that he could not get out. These moods vividly describe David's state of mind and situation as the background for his cry to God. For David believed that God had heard his cry.

This was David's prayer in the midst of a difficult situation. God allows His people to fall into distress because He wants us to call upon the LORD in our distress and experience Him as a living God. However, we often do not realize that we are caught in all kinds of ropes and snares, or we do not know how to call on the LORD in the midst of trouble, but rather we call on the powers and people, and we end up suffering in vain. Therefore, in the midst of our troubles, we must remember: Surely the LORD will wait and be gracious to you.

(2) The salvation of the Lord (V8-28)

Here we are given a sense of God's fierce anger because of David's cry. The psalmist expresses in hyperbole God's righteous indignation over his persecution, anger enough to burn. He is not the God who watches from a distance, but the God who hears the cry and reaches out in time. Finally the psalmist includes himself in the troubled community and trusts God for deliverance. The Psalmist does not hide the end of the haughty who are humbled, for they are hated by God.

The fact that He reached down from the high heavens and took hold of me and pulled me up out of the great waters is true for everyone who has truly experienced salvation. For a person who is about to drown in the great waters, how can one refuse such salvation when there is a hand that grasps him? God's deliverance is not only to lead us out of Egypt, but also to bring us into Canaan. He will also lead me to the wide place where we will be set free from the dominion of sin, the world, and the flesh, and be truly free in Christ.

The law of God concerning man is, that withwith the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. In the same way, as we would have God treat us, so shall we treat His Word.

(3) Reliance in faith (V29-31)

The word "lamp" is often used in Hebrew literature as a metaphor for life and prosperity. Though there is still weakness in the flesh, our God is able to light the "lamp" of our life, carry us into the enemy before us, jump over the walls of our life, break through the enemy, and flee from temptation. For as many as trust in Him, He is their shield.

3. Response from the heart (22:32-51)

Verse 32 is a declaration of the fusion of experience and faith, a declaration of faith commonly used by Old Testament characters. The rock is a precious landmark in the semi-desert and hot wilderness, a place of protection, reliance, and resting place for the traveller to land. The psalmist next describes in parables God's blessing of his own victory and the helpless defeat of his enemies. David recognises that this air of invincibility and complete victory is the work of God, so he concludes the psalm by praising the Lord. Since God had done all this for David, it was only right that he should give thanks to God among the nations.

Conclusion:

God is faithful! When we are willing to turn to God and rely on Him and obey Him, He will deliver us from all bondage and suffering. Because He is our Heavenly Father, He will surely reach out and save.
