2 Samuel 1 One death news, two reactions.

Introduction: One kind of rice feeds a hundred kinds of people

From Saul's death, we are shown that the Amalekites and David, who reported the news, reacted to the news of Saul's death in two very different ways.

1. The Boy Who Wanted to Make a Deadly Fortune (V1-16)

(1) Badly Intentioned, Profit-Motivated

Saul's death meant that David did not have to flee anymore. So the Amalekite boy, who had a bad heart, traveled a long way to give David the news of Saul's death with the intention of making a profit.

(2) Not truthful, mixture of truth and falsehood

From the account of Saul's death in 1Sam 31, and the discrepancy between the Amalekite's oral account, we can infer that this boy was lying, and his words were mixed with falsehoods, and he made up the lie of killing Saul to try to please David. The great thing about the devil is that he doesn't tell all lies, but a mixture of truth and falsehood makes it easier for people to fall for his lies.

(3) The Wrong Purpose: Inviting Credit and Losing Your Life

The purpose of the Amalekite boy's disinformation was to claim credit. He even took credit for Saul's death, hoping to get a big reward. But the wrong purpose led him to a dead end, and he lost his life instead of claiming the credit!

It is not wrong to plan for one's own interests, but do not 'play tricks’ and become a villain with an evil heart and a bad intent! What good is it to gain the whole world and lose one's life?

2. Honouring David the Anointed One (V17-27)

(1) Putting to death the king's wicked slayer

David condemned the Amalekite youth to death based on his words. A wicked man who murders a man should pay with his life, let alone if he kills God's anointed. If David had rewarded him for reporting that he had killed the king, he would have shared in his sin!

Today we must not kill, but we can share testimonies so that our friends and family will repent and rely on the Lord to heal the old self! We also need to examine ourselves daily to exterminate all the evil things and thoughts in our hearts and homes, and to keep away from temptation.

(2) Remembering of Human Goodness Alone

When David heard the news of Saul's death, instead of rejoicing at the end of his suffering, his immediate reaction was to weep bitterly. He made a dirge for Saul and praised him, remembering only Saul's goodness and not mentioning his sin at all. This shows that David, in the fear of God, always honoured Saul as God's anointed king.

We need to follow David's example of honouring only the good in people. Learn to praise and avoid judgment.

(3) True love in life and death

David and Jonathan were life and death friends who could sacrifice their lives for each other! The depth of their affection was of true love! Therefore, David grieved greatly over Jonathan's death! And he spoke of their deep and true love in psalms!

Conclusion: for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap!

The very different reactions and results of the Amalekite and David confirm that God is not to be mocked. for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap! (Gal. 6:7) Ask God to help us to live lives that love God and love people! Otherwise we will end up reaping nothing!
