1 Samuel 18 Righteous heart vs. crooked heart
GK611 Morning Devotion

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Co-worker Asher Chang
Introduction:If you are not right, you are crooked
1. David with a right heart
(1) A God-given confidant (V1-4)
Two men with God allied as life and death friends. They both fought for God's name and relied on Him. Therefore, the two became very close and became very good friends. Jonathan didn't even care about all the things he had as a prince, but shared them all with David, which was a very precious friendship.
(2) Experiences that elevate people's hearts (V5)
After David killed the giant Goliath, he was promoted by Saul to the position of chief warrior. Saul's servants and the people were very happy with David. David was invisible to everyone, but now they all saw David's excellence. God promoted David, and even the women were happy for David.
(3) Smoothness and Prosperity in All Things (V13-16)
David continued to experience elevation with God. The people began to follow him in and out, and he became better and better and more and more shrewd, and the hearts of the people turned more and more to David! On the contrary, Saul kept on losing the hearts of the people.
(4) Victory in all things (V27)
No matter what problem he faced, David with God was always able to solve it, and better than expected.
(5) Honoured in the hearts of the people (V30)
David was upright, he submitted to authority and feared God, and the Spirit of God was with him. He had victory, peace, and honour in the hearts of the people.
2. Saul with a crooked heart
(1) Blinded by envy (V6-9)
Seeing David, who was so pleasing to the people, Saul’s heart began to twist, and he became very angry and envious of David. Feelings of jealousy can easily blind us, and even slowly eat away at our hearts, causing us to become hostile toward others.
(2) Greatly smitten by the devil (10-11)
Saul, who had a crooked heart, was greatly smitten by the devil, and he began to lose his mind and became motivated to kill. His heart was filled with fear and sin. On the other hand, David, who was with God, remained calm in the face of the assassination.
(3) No Peace but Fear (V12)
The reason for Saul's fear of David was that he realised that the LORD had left him and was with David. Saul was bound by jealousy and his heart was filled with fear of losing his power and the hearts of the people. We too may face the temptation of jealousy in our hearts when we see the progress of others, but all we can do is to face it honestly and ask the Holy Spirit to help us to let God's love fill us.
(4) Filled with Fear and Hatred (V17-26)
Saul promised his eldest daughter Merab to David, ostensibly to fulfill his promise, but his heart was full of hatred, and he only wanted to fulfill his plan to kill David.
(5) Fear and Fear Again in All Things (V28-29)
A crooked hearted life brings fear, like a snowball rolling, the more it rolls the more fear it accumulates. We need to be alert to connect with God and walk in His ways. Be like David, not afraid of losing the love of man, but more in awe of the love of God.
Conclusion: Righteous heart vs. crooked heart
A man with a right heart does things wisely, is with God, and wins the hearts of the people.
Those with crooked hearts are confused, with demons, and will be stigmatized for years to come.
