Romans 8: Life in the Holy Spirit GK611 Morning Devotion

Speaker: IP Stella Ling + Rev. David Tan

Introduction:

In today's chapter, we see the work of the Holy Spirit in us, helping us to be constantly renewed and live in victory in our lives. Therefore, the Holy Spirit plays a very important role in the process of sanctification in our lives.

1. In Christ (v1-17)

(1) Not Condemned (V1-4)

Today we are no longer condemned because of the law of the life-giving Spirit in us. The Holy Spirit carries life and frees us from the law of sin and death in Christ. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross condemns the sins of those who are united to Christ in His flesh, solving the basic problem of human flesh, so that God no longer pursues our sins, and so that we can "not follow the flesh, but the Spirit".

(2) Not of the flesh (V5-11)

If we care for the flesh, we will sin and reject God, and refuse to grow spiritually, and the result will be death. For "So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.". Just as Cain was in the flesh and "displeasing to God", God did not choose his sacrifice (Genesis 4:5).

If we are attentive to the Holy Spirit, we are putting our mind and heart in the Holy Spirit. When the Spirit of Christ dwells in us peacefully as host and king, and not as guest, we are no longer of the flesh, but of Christ.

(3) Becoming sons (12-17)

The scriptures clearly describe that those who are led by the Holy Spirit are sons of God. Verse 13 brings out that we will live because we have the spirit of the Son. The original word "Son's heart" is "Son's Spirit", and the life given by this Spirit is the life of God's Son. God has revived us by His Spirit so that we may receive the eternal life of God and be partakers of the divine nature and be able to bear the inheritance in Christ.

2. The Hope of Glory (V18-27)

(1) Freedom From the Dominion of Corruption (V18-22)

God's will is to restore all things through the restoration of man, as it is said in James 1:18, "Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” God restores people to be "children of God", makes the church the glory of God, and releases all creation from the dominion of corruption. Therefore, the creation can expect to be freed from the dominion of corruption, and to enjoy the glory of the freedom of the children of God.

(2) Hope for what is not seen (V23-25)

After we were born again and saved, we had the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, so that we might become the first fruits of the Spirit, the Spirit who has the first fruits in us. Today we have salvation through Christ. However, we have to wait for the future to fully enjoy salvation and the redemption of our bodies. This hope does not come through the eyes of the flesh, but through seeing with the eyes of faith.

(3) The Intercession of the Holy Spirit (V26-27)

The intercession of the Holy Spirit is to pray for the saints according to the will of God, so that they will be answered by God. We were weak, and our lives were full of strongholds, but because the Holy Spirit helped us, prayed and interceded for us, so that we had no fear. For the Holy Spirit is the best and most powerful intercessor. As long as we stray from God, the Holy Spirit continues to intercede for us, so that our lives may be renewed and breakthrough, and so that we may have hope in the glory of the future.

3. Choosing to love God (V28-39)

(1) To benefit people (V28-30)

God's will is to restore man through all things, and to restore all things through the man being restored. Believers are all chosen by God and called according to His purpose. Therefore, nothing happens to us by accident, but everything happens by God's arrangement or permission in order to "benefit" us. This benefit is that we may be conformed to the image of His Son and be glorified. Gradually we are being renewed and changed into the likeness of Christ.

(2) Receive help (V31-36)

"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?" (V31)

We are not the center of God, He is not to help us to do what our hearts desire, but in His way and in His time, helping us to accomplish His good purposes in us. As we are united with Christ, He will love us to the end, and no situation can separate us from the love of Christ, which comforts us in our pain, renews us in our weakness, and makes all things work together for our eternal good.

(3) Experiencing Victory (V37-39)

We need to understand that today we are not victorious only when we are free from "tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?" (V35), but we know that we are more than conquerors in all these things. Because the Lord who loves us has overcome, all we have to do is to rest in Him in all circumstances and wait for God to make all things work together for our eternal benefits. Therefore, let us resist the deceitfulness of the evil one, knowing that we have overcome all things!

Conclusion:

Brothers and sisters, may all our lives be in the Holy Spirit and enjoy all the riches and grace that Christ has given us!
