Grace comes and people respond

Introduction: A controversial miracle

I. The paralytic’s reaction: being healed but shirking responsibility (John 5:1-15)

1. 38 years of waiting and despair (V1-7)

This patient had been lying by the pool of Bethesda for 38 years and had become accustomed to being ignored. When Jesus asked him, "Do you want to be healed?", his answer was not "Yes", but he complained, "No one put me in the pool" (V7). This reflects that:
Long-term difficulties make people develop a "victim mentality", get used to passive waiting, are unwilling to take the initiative to change, and put the responsibility on the environment and others.

2. God’s sudden grace (V8-9)

Jesus did not heal the patient in the way he expected, but directly commanded: ‘Get up, take up your mat and walk!’ (V8) This shows that:
God’s grace often exceeds our expectations. True healing brings immediate action. God’s word itself carries power.

3. Evasion when facing questioning (V10-15)

When the Jews questioned him, the paralytic immediately distanced himself from the matter: ‘The one who made me well said to me…’ (V11). This reaction shows that:
He was afraid of being associated with Jesus when the stakes were high and chose to protect himself rather than bravely confess his faith.

Summary:Are we often like the paralytic, who was saved but unwilling to stand by Jesus' side at the critical moment? Are we used to shirking responsibility instead of bravely confessing our faith?

II. The Jewish Response: Clinging to the Law and Rejecting Grace (John 5:16-18)

1. Focus on the law rather than miracles (V16)

The Jewish leaders completely ignored the fact that a man with 38 years of paralysis was healed and only focused on the fact that Jesus healed the patient on the Sabbath. This shows that:

Religious ritualism makes people blind, traditions may become obstacles to knowing God, and obsession with rules exceeds care for life.

2. From doubt to murder (V17-18)

Because Jesus declared, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working," the Jewish leaders' reaction escalated from the initial "questioning" to "wanting to kill Him" (5:18). This shows that spiritual pride leads to the inability to accept new revelations, and even to the desire to remove the Son of Man who gives grace.

Are we often "spiritual policemen" who pick on others but fail to see God's work? Are we suspicious of new things instead of discerning?

III. Jesus’ Response: God’s ‘Authorization Statement’ (John 5:19-47)

1. Declaration of co-work with God the Father (V19-20)
2. Authority of resurrection and judgment (V21-30)
3. Testimony and verification of truth (V31-47)

Summary: Jesus did not avoid conflict, but responded with the truth; can we also speak out for the truth bravely? What do we rely on to stand firm in the face of doubts?

Conclusion: How do we respond to God’s grace?

May we not make excuses like the paralytic, or be rigid like the Jews, but bear witness to the truth like the Lord Jesus and respond to God’s grace!
