Matthew Chapter 27

The Cross – A Transaction Between the Lord and Humanity

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Rev David Tan

Introduction:Life is filled with “transactions”!

What are we “transacting” in our lives?
Jesus “transacted” His death on the cross for our lives!

I. Sinners Shift the Blame (Matt. 27:1-10)

1. The Darkness of Religious Leaders (V2)

Religious leaders, who should embody love, instead reveal the deepest sin and hatred of murder! Their faith and actions were utterly inconsistent, even contradictory. Are we like this?

2. Acknowledging Sin but Avoiding Repentance (V3-5)

Judas realized his sin and wrongdoing. This recognition could have been an opportunity for repentance and forgiveness. Yet, he chose suicide, compounding his mistake! Does he not know that repentance is the way out?

3. Blindness to One's Own Sin (V6-10)

The chief priests knew the money was blood money, the price of innocent blood, yet failed to see themselves as the real murderers. How ironic that they spoke so righteously while being so blind! Are we also blind to our own faults?

II. The People Judge the Savior (Matt. 27:11-25)

1. A King is a King: No Need for Words (V11-14)

Jesus remained silent before His accusers because words would be in vain. Silence can often be more powerful, especially when you know the Almighty God sees and reigns eternally.

2. Release the Innocent: Stop Shifting Responsibility (V15-19)

The governor knew Jesus was innocent and that the religious leaders handed Him over out of envy. Yet, instead of executing justice, he left the decision to the crowd. God entrusts us with responsibilities—how can we answer to Him if we neglect them?

3. Turning Right into Wrong: Self-Curse (V20-25)

Jealousy and hatred, fueled by mob mentality, led to the shedding of innocent blood. The people even brought a curse upon themselves and their descendants. Humanity, in self-righteousness, plays judge, unaware they are inviting judgment upon themselves.

III. Jesus Dies for Sinners (Matt. 27:26-50)

1. Sinners Sin upon Sin: They Mocked the Lord (V26-31)

Sinners not only fail to recognize their sin but also mock the Savior who bore their guilt. Yet Jesus endured all to save us.

2. The Cross: The Savior Willingly Suffers (V32-37)

Jesus willingly walked toward Golgotha, bearing the cruelest suffering, to take on the sins of humanity.

3. Blind to the Truth: Mocking the Savior (V38-44)

Sinners mocked the Savior because they did not believe in Him. Do you truly believe Jesus is the Lord of your life and your eternity?

4. Darkness Over the Earth: The Savior Dies for Humanity (V45-50)

The moment Jesus died on the cross was the darkest hour for humanity, as He bore the sins of the world. If the Lord died for us, shouldn’t we live for Him?

IV. The Disciples Bury the Son of God (Matt. 27:51-66)

1. The Earth Trembled, the Dead Were Raised (V51-53)

Jesus’ death brought resurrection to God’s people. Back then, it was literal; today, it’s spiritual for those who accept His atoning sacrifice.

2. Truly the Son of God: Serve Even in Death (V54-61)

All the evidence pointed to Jesus as the Son of God. Will you understand this and rise to serve Him?

3. Religious Leaders’ Unbelief: Even in Death (V62-66)

Those bound by rigid religious frameworks often let their preconceptions override the truth before their eyes. This is the ignorance of unbelief that leads to destruction.

Conclusion:The Cross – A Life-and-Death Transaction with the Lord!

The Lord on the cross sacrificed Himself for us. Shouldn’t we live for the One who grants eternal life?
