Get Set Ready!

Matthew Chapter 24:

Get Set Ready! — Be alert and ready to meet the Lord

Introduction:

Prepare for a rainy day

Jesus said, “Behold, I have told you beforehand.” (Matthew 24:25)

1. When? What omen? (V1-3)

After Jesus left the temple, he predicted that the temple would be destroyed. The disciples were shocked and asked Jesus three questions privately:

(1) When will these things happen?
(2) What are the signs of Jesus’ coming?
(3) What are the signs of the end of the world?

The disciples wanted to know the time so they could prepare in advance. But Jesus did not directly answer "when". Instead, he emphasized the importance of "seeing the signs" and warned them to be alert and not to be deceived. This tells us that the end of the world is not a fixed point in time, but a continuous process that requires us to maintain spiritual acuity and firmness in the truth for a long time.

2. The Beginning of the End of the World: Be careful not to be deceived

(1) The deception of false Christs (V4-5)
(2) War and disaster (V6-8)
(3) The persecution of believers and the spread of the gospel (V9-14)

Jesus reminded his disciples to be careful not to be deceived. He pointed out that the beginning of the end of the world will be accompanied by the emergence of false Christs, wars, famines and earthquakes. These are the beginning of disasters, but they are not the end of the world. Believers will face persecution, but Jesus encourages us to endure it to the end.

3. The end of the world is coming: be clear-headed and distinguish between truth and falsehood

(1) The coming of the great tribulation (V15-22)

(2) The appearance of false Christs and false prophets (V23-28)

Jesus further describes that when the “great tribulation” comes, believers need to act quickly and not hesitate. When the disaster is at its most severe, false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will even show great signs and wonders in an attempt to deceive the elect. Jesus specifically warned his disciples: “Don’t believe it!”

The “great tribulation” in this passage not only refers to past historical events, but also foreshadows the great difficulties in the future in the end times. During this period, believers need to have a clear understanding of God and avoid being confused.

4. The past of the last days: Be alert and prepared to welcome the coming of the Lord

(1) The glory of the Lord appears (V29-31)
(2) The Parable of the Fig Tree (V32-35)
(3) The Parable of the Faithful Servant (V36-51)

Jesus did not tell his disciples what time it would be, but he kept telling them the signs of the end of the world. He emphasized that no one knows the specific time of the Lord’s return, so we must always remain alert and, like faithful servants, be ready to welcome the Lord with confidence no matter when He returns.

Conclusion:

Get Set Ready!

Although today’s scripture says a lot about the terrible end of the world, we don’t even know when it will be. But Jesus told us these things in advance, and even told us the good news in advance. The return of the Lord is our ultimate hope. We don’t know when that day will come, but we know that at this moment we can choose to be alert and prepared, serve faithfully, live for the Lord, and more importantly, continue to spread this good news. Let us remember Jesus’ warning, recognize the signs of the end of the world, keep our faith, face the future bravely, and welcome His glorious coming!
