Matthew 19

Returning to God’s Original Intent

GK611 Morning Devotion
02/01/2025
The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps Deborah

Introduction:

After completing His teachings and ministry in Galilee, Jesus headed to Jerusalem. A crowd followed Him, including those seeking teaching, healing, or driven by curiosity. Some, like the Pharisees, had ulterior motives to oppose Him.

I. God’s Design for Marriage (V3-12)

1. Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife? (V3-9)

The Pharisees asked Jesus if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife, attempting to test Him.

Jesus avoided answering directly and instead redirected them to God’s original intent for marriage: a union between one man and one woman, joined as one flesh for a lifetime. Divorce was not part of God’s design but was permitted by Moses because of the hardness of human hearts.

When people harden their hearts and resist God’s word, He may allow them to follow their desires temporarily, but this is never His true will. Straying from God’s intentions often results in negative consequences, such as strained relationships or physical and emotional harm from misplaced priorities like excessive ambition or greed.

The Pharisees used the law as a façade for their actions, but their intent was not pure. Believers are called to act with sincerity and integrity, reflecting God’s heart in their actions.

2. Returning to Simple Trust in God (V 10-15)

Marriage, beyond its role in procreation and stewardship of the earth, represents the covenant relationship between God and His people.

When the disciples heard Jesus’ teaching on marriage, they found it challenging and suggested that remaining single might be easier.

Jesus responded by using children as a metaphor, emphasizing the importance of childlike trust and dependence on God. Whether in marriage, singleness, or any other life circumstance, believers are called to return to simple, wholehearted trust in Him.

II. God’s Gift of Eternal Life (V16-29)

1. Eternal Life Is Not Earned by Good Deeds (V16-26)

A wealthy young man approached Jesus, asking what good deed he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus pointed out that, while the man outwardly followed commandments such as honoring his parents and refraining from murder, his heart was not fully surrendered to God.

In verse 21, Jesus, out of love, told the man to sell all his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. This invitation revealed the man’s misplaced security in his wealth. Sadly, the man left sorrowfully, unwilling to part with his riches.

Jesus then remarked that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter God’s kingdom. This does not mean wealth is inherently evil and prevents one from entering God’s kingdom but highlights the danger of placing trust in material possessions rather than God. Without placing our trust in Him, our faith are easily influenced by the temptations of this world.

The purpose of salvation is for harmonious relationship with God and people. Let’s desire a deeper knowledge of Him and walk with Him. Let our relationship with God be built on trust and love, and love others with our lives.

The "eye of a needle" may reference a small gate in ancient city walls, where a camel had to be unloaded and pushed through. This illustrates that believers must surrender all that hinders them from trusting God completely, for with God, all things are possible.

2. Forsaking All to Gain God’s Reward (V27-29)

Peter asked Jesus, “We have left everything that provide security to follow You. What then will there be for us?”

Jesus affirmed that those who forsake worldly possessions, relationships, or security for His sake will inherit eternal life. However, true surrender means relinquishing not only material possessions but also authority over one’s life, trusting God entirely.

The ultimate reward is God Himself—knowing Him and enjoying His presence. Those who have God lack nothing, for He is the source of all blessings.

Conclusion:
Do I Know God’s Will More Each Day (V30)

Jesus reminded His followers that “the first will be last, and the last first.” The First: Like the rich young man or even Peter, it’s easy to grow complacent in one’s current state or rely on earthly security, only to fall behind spiritually.

The Last: Those who begin with humble trust and obedience may surpass others in spiritual growth and faithfulness.

As we step into 2025, may we strive daily to know God’s will more deeply, allowing Him to transform us and accomplish His purposes in our lives. Let us experience God’s heart and walk closely with Him, achieving great things for His glory.
