Mark 14: Choose to Follow the Path of the Kingdom of God
GK611 Morning Devotion

Speaker: Ps Stella Ling + Rev David Tan

Introduction:

The way of the cross is not an easy path, just as today we are walking the path of the kingdom of God, which is full of many challenges and times when we go off course or get lost. In the past, Jesus chose to follow a path that was not easy but was God's intention and fulfilled God's plan of salvation. What is our choice today?

1. Wholehearted dedication or greed for gain (v3-21)

(1) The anointing of Jesus (v3-9)

Mary poured out the most precious alabaster flask on the head of Jesus, and also brought out the complete setting aside for the Lord. Her act also brings out the essence of worshiping Christ, which is to love Him, honour Him, offer oneself to Him with the greatest love, and be willing to offer the most precious things for Him.
May we, like Mary, offer ourselves wholeheartedly for God's use.

(2) The betrayal of Jesus (v10-21)

Judas, for the love of money, betrayed the Lord for 30 shekels, the price of 120 days' wages for an average worker. Even if Jesus, in the Passover supper, Jesus brought out that some of His disciples would betray Him in the hope that Judas would pull back from the precipice, but Judas did not appreciate the love and tolerance that Jesus showed to Him.
However, if on the one hand we say that we will give ourselves to Christ, but on the other hand we deny Him in our lives, this is actually the same as betraying Christ. For we are denying His love, truth, and His divinity.

2. Kingdom with God or denial of Christ (v22-31)

(1) Receive Holy Communion together(v22-26)

Jesus gives a new meaning to the bread and wine in that they prefigure the body and blood of Jesus to explain the significance of what He will accomplish on the cross. Whenever one receives the Holy Communion, it is also a remembrance of the blood of Jesus shed on the cross, which establishes a new covenant between God and man, so that each of us who believes in Jesus may come to God through Jesus. Although, we must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God, we also have the full assurance of knowing that He will hear us and save us from our sins.

(2) Denying Jesus (v27-31)

The problem we will find with people is that they are too conceited. Those who do not know themselves often think they are stronger and love the Lord more than others, yet we will see that those who fall the hardest are often those who think they are strong. Therefore, we need to remind ourselves often that we have to choose to be in the same kingdom with God, remembering often what Jesus has accomplished for us, so that we may know that we need to come to Him always in humility, confessing our weaknesses and seeing our shortcomings, and relying on Him at all times.

3. Be alert to pray or escape from the battlefield (v32-52)

(1) Always be alert (v32-42)

Being alert can help us to avoid going into "confusion". Confusion, or "temptation", is an opportunity for the enemy to take advantage of the situation. Therefore, the only way to avoid Satan's confusion is to be “watch and pray".

(2) Panic and scattering (v43-52)

The disciples fled from Jesus in the confusion. From this, we know more deeply that when we are not always alert to pray, and we are faced with distress and challenges, we will be scattered and unable to bear and face persecution and distress.

4. Witnessing the Kingdom of God or Denying the Gospel (v53-73)

(1) Courageous Confrontation (v53-65)

When faced with the judgment of the chief priests and the whole council, Jesus was prepared to face this tribulation with courage, which is also God's plan of salvation.

(2) Cowardice and retreat (V66-72)

Peter, who thought he was strong and loved the Lord, was intimidated by the words of the weak angelic girl. This brings out the fact that when we face difficult circumstances, we can be timid and even retreat. The most important thing is to learn to know the word of the Lord, to be touched by the word of the Lord, and to repent from the sorrow of our hearts in the midst of our failures, so that we can continue to go forward in the Lord.
Let us choose to witness to the kingdom of God, and let us face all challenges with courage through God.

Conclusion:

We need to choose to walk the path of the Kingdom of God! Ask God to help us that our life is wholeheartedly dedicated, one nation with God, alert in prayer and bold in witnessing the gospel of the kingdom of God.
