路加福音[第20章]|Book of Luke 20【心系神国,走向 One Way (2)】

Introduction: Not turning back no matter what
1. Break away from the mountain of religion (V1-26)
(1) Self-righteousness of the religious leaders: the evil vinedressers (V1-18)
The elders, chief priests, and scribes came to question what authority Jesus had to cleanse the temple because they felt they had the religious authority to collect money from those who were buying and selling in the temple, but Jesus asked them rhetorically, “The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?” (v4 ) and they could not answer.
These leaders with religious authority thought their authority was from God, so they chose not to believe Jesus, knowing the answer but pushing it as if they didn’t, but really just trying to protect their own interests. We need to be careful not to become the one who is unwilling to face the truth and is afraid to face himself and become a liar.
(2) The question of paying taxes to Caesar (V19-26)
Although the religious leaders knew that Jesus' parable was directed at them, they did not repent but set another trap against Jesus.
Jesus' teaching to us is that as people of the Kingdom we are to give to God what is due to God and to the government of the earth, not one or the other. We are to do our part. There is no conflict between what belongs to the earthly kingdom, which goes to the earthly king, who has earthly authority, and what belongs to the heavenly kingdom, which goes to God.
2. Break away from the mountains of the world (V27-40)
(1) Focus our eyes on eternity (V27-37)
The religious leaders later asked extreme questions that were not meant to be explored in good faith, but to challenge the resurrection faith. They were too rational and saw only the world, only the present, and not eternity. In eternity, "But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." (v.35-36)
"Worthy of the world" means "worthy to pass through the world", he is not the lost one in the world, but the one who is up to the mark, who can give like Zacchaeus after repentance, who has God's mercy and love, and become the people of God's kingdom, not the ones who are taken away by Mammon, who have everlasting life.
(2) God is the God of the living (V38-40)
God is the God who belongs to every one of us who is alive, for in Him all men are alive. In God, everyone is alive. We have the ability to make godly choices.
3. Break away from inferiority (V41-47)
(1) Acknowledging Jesus (V41-44)
Jesus' final question to the religious leaders was an answer to their initial question, "By what authority do You do these things?" Jesus speaks of the core of His identity, that He is the Son of David, but in fact the One who came from heaven and has been seated at the right hand of God the Father. The Anointed One is both the Son of Man and also the Son of God, one in honour, glory and power with God from all eternity.
Jesus knew His identity, but the religious leaders, who were familiar with God's Word, seemed completely unaware.
(2) Break away from hypocrisy (V45-47)
In the last three verses Jesus tells His disciples not to be like the Pharisees, greedy for fame, high position, clothing, and money. Our hearts are to be changed so that Jesus will be the head stone in our hearts and we will continue to live and walk this heavenly path before God and guard against all the shortcomings of the scribes.
Conclusion:
We need to often wake up our hearts to see if we are still connected to God and focused on pursuing the kingdom of God. Pray that God will help us to overcome all temptations, so that our hearts to love God and love people will not be taken over by power, fame, and the world.
