Luke 1 Believe God’s Prophecy and Respond to God’s Calling

The Morning Devotion Speaker: Ps. Daniel Kew
Introduction: When you hear God’s divine prophecy, will you believe it and respond to it?
1. Gospel written based on facts (V1-4)
Luke particularly emphasised that the gospel he preached was a gospel that was written based on facts because the things that had been accomplished were seen by others with their own eyes and carefully examined by him. And this is the most amazing thing about the gospel, it can be experienced and verified.
2. Prophecy of the birth of John the Baptist (V5-25)
(1) The prayers of the righteous are heard by God (V5-17)
Here we first talk about John’s parents, the priests Zechariah and Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God and blameless, but they were old and barren. Zechariah must have been praying and waiting for this for a long time.
When we pray, God responds to us in His best time and way. If you are waiting for answers to your prayers, Zachariah and his wife are your examples.
(2) Even though the priest is weak, God still shows mercy (V18-23)
Although Zechariah was a devout and righteous man, he still had moments of weakness. He only saw that their bodies were old and he could not see the power of God. Zechariah's unbelief rendered him temporarily mute. But in the end, God was still gracious to the couple and allowed Elizabeth to get pregnant to remove the shame.
We must have faith to believe God’s prophecies. God’s words often make the impossible possible, and human’s reasoning cannot hinder God’s will. What God predicted four hundred years ago will be fulfilled four hundred years later. God is not forgetful but waits for His timing.
3. Prophecy of the birth of Jesus, the Son of God (V26-56)
An angel appeared to a virgin Mary, foretelling that she would conceive from the Holy Spirit and give birth to a son. He would be named Jesus, and he would be called the Son of God. Mary answered: Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word. Mary chose to accept this challenging call, and then she said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. no matter what method God uses to accomplish His will, Mary firmly believes 'God has done great things for me'!
Mary is a brave girl! Especially in that era, those who became pregnant out of wedlock would not only be divorced by their fiancés but might even be stoned to death. Nevertheless, Mary fully believed in and responded to God’s will. The person God will use must be someone who obeys and responds to God!
4. The Lord’s pioneer is born (V57-80)
The birth of John the Baptist was a great joy because he was the pioneer who opened the way for the Lord! John will bring great joy and hope to people. When Zechariah wrote the words "His name is John," Zechariah's mouth opened, his tongue loosed, and he began to speak and praise God!
Zechariah filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied that salvation was coming; God has placed the power of salvation in us. John the Baptist was to bring salvation to God's people.
Conclusion:
Let us all learn from Mary, believe in God’s prophecies, and respond to God’s calling. Come before God every day, meditate more on and understand His words, and obey them willingly, ‘because the Word of God brings power’! When God’s will is revealed in our lives, we can become vessels that glorify God!
