John 7
Do You Believe the Teaching from God?

Introduction: If you don’t believe, how can you walk together?

Yesterday, John 6 took place during the Passover, where Jesus said His flesh was food… Some couldn't accept it and stopped following Him (John 6:66). Now in John 7, during the Feast of Tabernacles, we see similar divisions among the crowd. What about you?

I. Why Do People Not Believe? (John 7:1–7)

1. Unbelief breeds murderous intent (V1–2)

The “Jews” here refer to the religious leaders in Judea and Jerusalem. Their deep-rooted traditions made them resistant to Jesus’ teachings and miracles, which exposed and surpassed their own understanding. Jealousy surfaced and they plotted to kill Him—showing they had not only broken the commandments but fallen into Satan’s schemes.

2. Even His own brothers didn’t believe (V3–5)

Familiarity often breeds contempt. When someone close to us suddenly displays spiritual insight beyond our own, it can provoke discomfort, disbelief, and strange reactions. Those who belong to God respond with humility and patience. Even when surrounded by unbelief, we must continue to trust in God.

3. Unbelief reveals sinful nature (V6–7)

When sin is exposed, people often respond with anger. They not only disbelieve but attack those who speak the truth. Isn’t this still true today? The more evil a person is, the less they want their darkness exposed.

II. No Fellowship with Unbelievers (John 7:8–13)

1. Jesus didn’t waste words on unbelief (V8–10)

Jesus didn’t argue with unbelievers—because it’s often fruitless and only stirs up more resistance. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they are the ones who will believe!

2. Fear of losing benefit leads to silence (V11–13)

During the Feast, many had differing opinions about Jesus. But few dared to speak openly for fear of the religious leaders, who had the power to expel people from the synagogue—central to their lives and livelihood. Are you willing to boldly proclaim the gospel of Jesus despite opposition?

III. Teachings from God (John 7:14–36)

1. A teaching unlike any other (V14–18)

Jesus taught with power and authority because His message came from God. How can we discern if a teaching is from God? If one is truly willing to do God's will, the Holy Spirit will reveal whether the teaching is true.

2. Signs that set Him apart (V19–27)

Without truth in our hearts, we can be easily misled—even confusing right and wrong. Rules were seen as more important than healing and doing good. People missed the grace of God’s miracles simply because they didn't fit into their traditions.

3. A witness like no other (V28–36)

Jesus was sent by God and would return to Him. Such a unique messenger should not be taken lightly. We too are now sent by the Lord—let us continue to proclaim His truth boldly.

IV. The Lord Is Living Water (John 7:37–52)

The climax of the Feast of Tabernacles was the pouring out of water—symbolizing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In John 3, the humble Pharisee Nicodemus learned of being born of water and the Spirit. Now, he hears again of the living water given by the Spirit—a glimpse of the coming Kingdom of God. Sadly, those with hardened hearts who refuse to believe remain under the curse of sin.

Conclusion: What About You?

Since you’re attending morning devotion, it shows you believe Jesus’ teachings come from God. But knowing isn’t the same as doing. Obedience is more important than knowledge. Those who hear and act on God's word will surely be blessed.
