Exodus Chapter 34:
Starting Afresh

Introduction: Opportunities After Brokenness

I. The Tablets Rewritten (vv. 1-4)

1. Preparing the Tablets Anew (v1-4)

We see that God Himself instructed Moses to cut two new tablets and rewrite the Law, signifying that failure is not the end. God was still willing to lead His people forward. Sometimes, we may feel unworthy of being used by God due to our failures or weaknesses. However, God's intention is not to abandon us but to teach us through failure and guide us forward.

2. The Glory of God Descends (vv. 5-7)

God proclaimed before Moses that He is merciful and gracious, willing to forgive. However, this does not mean we can take sin lightly. Since God “by no means clears the guilty” (v. 7), we must sincerely repent and allow Him to cleanse us.

3. Moses Humbly Interceding (v8-9)

Upon hearing God’s proclamation, Moses did not argue or make excuses for Israel. Instead, he worshiped God in complete humility. He also interceded for the people, asking God to continue journeying with them and to once again claim them as His “inheritance.”

II. God Renews the Covenant (Exodus 34:10-28)

1. God Will Perform Wonders (vv. 10-11))

God promised Moses: “I will do marvels such as have not been done in all the earth” (v. 10). This shows that God’s plan was still in motion, despite Israel’s rebellion. God’s work is greater than human failure. Though we may stumble due to weakness, His grace is far greater, and He can still lead us into His promises.

2. A Call to Reject Idolatry (vv. 12-17)

God forbade Israel from making covenants, intermarrying, or partaking in the pagan practices of the Canaanites. This was to prevent them from engaging in idolatry, which would lead them away from God into destruction. Today, we must also guard against "idols"—anything in our lives that distracts us from God.

3.Remembering God’s Faithfulness (vv. 18-26)

God commanded Israel to observe various feasts, such as the Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Sabbath, and the Feast of Firstfruits. These were not mere religious rituals but reminders of God’s mighty works.

4. Drawing Closer to God (v27-28)

Moses spent forty days in God’s presence, and his life was transformed. When he descended from the mountain, his face shone (Exodus 34:29). True intimacy with God requires time and a desire to understand His heart. Are we willing, like Moses, to invest time in truly seeking Him?

III. Transformation Through God’s Presence (Exodus 34:29-35)

1. God’s Presence Brings Change (v. 29)

When Moses came down from the mountain, his face radiated God’s glory, causing the people to fear approaching him. This glow was not something Moses deliberately sought; rather, it was the natural result of spending time in God's presence. A person who truly walks with God will reflect His character in their words, actions, and demeanour.

2.The Fear of God's Glory (vv. 30-31)

The Israelites were afraid to come near Moses because of the radiance of his face. This reminds us that God’s presence is holy and commands reverence. Those who truly fear God will honor Him in every aspect of their lives.

3. Continuous Renewal Through God (vv. 32-35)

Moses’ face did not shine just once—it glowed every time he met with God. This illustrates that spiritual renewal is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Just as physical fitness requires regular training, our spiritual lives also require discipline and devotion.

Conclusion:The Grace of a New Beginning

No matter our past failures, God is always willing to give us a new beginning.
