Introduction: Declaration of Love

I. God’s love releases us (Exodus 20:1-2)

As it is written in Exodus 19: God leads us close to His presence like an eagle. This not only allows us to experience liberation from slavery but also demonstrates God’s endless mercy and grace. When we read this chapter, we should receive it with reverence and gratitude, because the Ten Commandments are not only a set of laws, but also a declaration of God’s love. It is precisely because God saved the Israelites that today we have the opportunity to experience the love that He continues to provide every day.

II. The Ten Commandments—The Learning Journey of Love (Exodus 20:3-17)

The Ten Commandments clearly show the order of love: love God first, then love your neighbour. The first four commandments guide us on how to establish a correct relationship with God, while the next six commandments teach us how to live a life of loving others based on loving God. Only when the relationship between people and God is right can there be true harmony between people. Otherwise, people's hearts will easily be driven by sin, leading to killing, stealing, adultery and other behaviours that destroy relationships. God established the Ten Commandments not to control us, but out of love and to give us the best living standards so that we can be blessed on the road of loving God and loving others.

A. The commandment to love God (Exodus 20:3-11)

1. Only you—I am willing (V3)
2. Only love you—never change (V4-6)
3. Believe in your name—honour you (V7)
4. Sabbath—to enjoy blessings (V8-11)

Love for God is the foundation of all commandments. Only by worshiping the only true God, will life not be distracted by idols or worldly things; only by honouring God's name can we live a life worthy of God's glory; only in the rest established by God can the soul be truly satisfied. God's love invites us into an intimate relationship with Him, making Him the center of our lives, and finding true freedom and contentment in His grace.

B. The commandment to love others (Exodus 20:11-17)

1. Put God first—honour your parents (V12)
2. Love your neighbour as yourself—cherish life (V13)
3. Fidelity in marriage – unity and blessing (V14)
4. Be honest—give diligently (V15)
5. Turn away from lies—come to truth (V16)
6. Contentment and gratitude—soul richness (V17)

The true testimony of loving God is to live a life of loving others. God teaches us to honor our parents, because obeying authority is the first step in learning to love others; He commands us to cherish life and not kill, because everyone is created in His image; He sets the boundaries of marriage to demonstrate the loyalty of love; He calls us to be honest, generous and helpful, and to have a content and grateful heart, so that the relationship between people is full of blessings. Loving others is not based on human moral standards, but because God’s love flows within us, making us willing to respect, support, and care for each other, and jointly witness the glory of God.

III. Love makes people fearless (Exodus 20:18-21)

True love brings awe, not fear. The people of Israel stood far away amid the thunder, lightning, and sound of trumpets, and did not dare to approach God. However, God’s intention was for people to approach Him out of fear. If the law is only engraved on tablets of stone, people will eventually be unable to obey it. Only if it is engraved on tablets of heart can we live a life that is pleasing to God. To fear God is not to be afraid, but to be willing to obey and walk the right path in His love.

IV Heavenly Father is loving and merciful (Exodus 20:21-26)

God knows man’s weakness, so he sets up an altar to prepare a way out for man. Burnt offerings and peace offerings typify Jesus Christ as the ultimate sin offering, allowing us to draw close to God. God’s love transcends the requirements of the law, and He longs for our hearts to return to Him, not to stay within the rules. By understanding the mercy of Heavenly Father, we can regain our strength in grace and live out the lives of children of God.

Conclusion: Love God, love people, and move towards freedom

Loving yourself will keep you in Egyptian bondage; loving God will bring you true freedom. The Ten Commandments are not only the norms of the law, but also the invitation of God’s love, allowing us to live a life of fearing God and loving others as ourselves. When we choose to love God, we can be released from the bondage of sin, move toward abundance and freedom, and live a truly blessed life in God's grace.
