God's festivals are intended for people.

Introduction: Valentine's Day gifts - Gifts are intended for the other person, and God's festivals are also intended for people.

I. Passover: The festival of redemption established by God for people (Exodus 12:1-14)

1. The price of redemption (v.1-7, 13)

a. The spotless lamb takes the place of sinful man (v.1-6)
b. The blood of the Lamb brings salvation (v.7,13)

Passover is the first festival established by God himself, and it is also the first festival observed by the Israelites. The purpose is to let the people experience salvation in the night of life and death. This is God’s intention to save the people. This was not stuck in the past. It still applies to us today. This spotless lamb and the blood doorframe symbolize Jesus Christ, who came to the world completely sinless and without blemish, but was nailed to the cross for our sins, shed his precious blood, and became our Passover Lamb.

2. Festivals in response to God’s call

a. Remember the lessons of the past (v.8)
b. Refined by fire (v.9-10)
c. Get out of the old life quickly (v.11)
d. Acts of faith (v.12-13)
e. Pass on God’s salvation from generation to generation (v.14)

God’s salvation is not just to escape death, but to bring us into new life. Therefore, when God established the Passover, he also instructed the people how to respond to His grace. Unleavened bread and bitter herbs are eaten on Passover. The unleavened bread represented quick action and breaking away from the old life; the bitter herbs reminded them of their suffering in Egypt and kept them from forgetting God's salvation. When eating the Passover lamb, you have your waist girded, shoes on your feet, and staff in hand, ready to go. This meant that they had to leave Egypt quickly without delay. Today, God also says to us: "Are you ready?"

II. The Feast of Unleavened Bread: the call to uphold holiness (Exodus 12:15-20)

1. Unleavened bread – to take away sins (v.15)
2. Seven Days of Unleavened Bread – Maintain Holiness (v.16)
3. God leads the army out (v.17)
4. Continue to persevere (v.18-20)

When the Israelites were preparing to leave Egypt, God commanded them to observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This is a festival closely connected with the Passover, which represents getting rid of sin, maintaining holiness, and preparing ourselves to become God’s people. In this passage, God specifically emphasizes that we must remove all leaven from our homes and not eat any food containing leaven. This is a spiritual symbol that reminds us to completely eliminate sin and not let sin affect our lives. Today, we are going to look at the meaning of this festival to see how God calls us to enter a holy life and become God’s army.

III. The choice between life and death (Exodus 12:21-30)

1. Obey God’s commands and be saved (v.21-28)
2. Disobey God’s command and suffer disaster (v.29-30)

During this period of history, the Israelites faced a life-or-death choice: Should they obey God's command, smear blood on their door lintels, and experience God's redemption, or should they ignore God's guidance and ultimately fall into disaster? This is not only the choice of the Israelis, but also the choice of every era and every person. We also see that when the Egyptian Pharaoh and his servants chose to continue to be stubborn, the outcome was one plague after another, and finally the children were killed. Today, we are also facing a spiritual “night of life and death.” Should we choose to obey God or follow our own path?

IV. Experience God’s true promises (Exodus 12:31-42)

1. Redemption of wealth when leaving Egypt (v.31-36)
2. Moving towards a new life (v.37-42)

The Israelites experienced more than 400 years of slavery in Egypt. They cried out to God day and night to save them. God finally led them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land according to His promise. At this moment, not only were they freed, but it was also a testimony of God’s faithfulness! This reminds us that God’s promises never fail. As long as we follow Him closely, we will surely experience His true provision and guidance.

V. Whoever is willing can be saved (Exodus 12:43-51)

God established the Passover, not just for the Israelites, but for all who are willing to return to Him. God’s salvation does not only belong to the Israelites, but to anyone who is willing to join God! Being circumcised signifies a willingness to let go of one’s old identity and to belong fully to God and become His people. Then they could eat the Passover lamb—which meant that Gentiles were not automatically saved but had to be willing to obey God’s covenantal way.

Conclusion:

God establishes festivals not for Himself, but so that people can better understand His will, escape suffering, and enter new life. He is full of mercy and still gives us the opportunity to respond to His call today!
