Introduction: The meaning of holding a golden key
1. Other descendants of the tribe of Benjamin (V1-32)
There were ten sons in the tribe of Benjamin, five of whom are recorded in verse 1. These descendants may be distributed in the north and south, and some may live in the south, such as in the territory of Judah, including Jerusalem, Geba, Ono and Lod, Aijalon, Gibeon and other places. Although there are many names in today’s scripture, we can choose to focus on the stories of a few of them to reflect on the work of God. In the face of adversity, we must choose to experience the glory of God and firmly choose to continue to follow Him and never give up.
(1) Hushim: Abandoned but remembered by God (V8-28)
Although Hushim was abandoned by her husband, God favoured her greatly. Her descendants flourished in the area abandoned by the tribe of Dan, establishing the cities of Ono and Lod, as well as Aijalon, and many famous tribe leaders settled in Jerusalem.
(2) Shimei: Losing the opportunity to continue to be blessed (V19-21)
The Shimei mentioned in this passage is most likely the son of Gera, the grandson of Bela, the same Shimei who attacked David when he fled. As a famous tribe leader in Jerusalem, he received special favour from God. However, when the king was in trouble, he chose to oppose the king and was eventually eliminated by King Solomon. He had a chance to continue to be blessed, but he perished because of what he saw.
2. Saul’s genealogy (V33-40)
(2) Saul: failed to continue to follow and lost blessings
Saul started out as an insignificant person among the Israelites. He came from an ordinary family without a golden key or a powerful background. However, God chose him and chose him to be the first king of Israel. Despite this great opportunity, Saul failed to firmly follow God’s will. In the end, he perished because of his own fleshly actions.
(3) Merib-Baal: Although disabled and powerless, he is favoured by God
Merib-Baal is Mephibosheth. His father died when he was young, and he himself was lame, so he could only beg on the roadside. However, God favoured him and he received favour from King David.
Conclusion:
In the face of adversity, the true glory lies not in your initial glory, but in whether you continue to follow God. No matter how humble our beginnings, God will care for and bless those who rely on Him. So let us learn to rely on God and choose carefully because His plans are better than we can imagine. In the midst of adversity, God’s glory is revealed in our lives. Believe in God’s promises, and He will lead us to a bright future.
