Introduction:

Let us reflect on our faith and trust in God through the lives of the three characters in this chapter: Goliath, Saul, and David.

1. Goliath with no God in his sight (V4-10, 48-51)

The giant Goliath defies the Israelites and the true God, Jehovah. When he saw David, he despised David and cursed David with his god. He was killed by a stone thrown by David and fell face down on the ground. Just like Dagon, the god of the Philistines, fell before the ark of the Lord, with his face on the ground.

The culture in the world is that the strong preys on the weak, between people and between countries, is full of mutual oppression and infighting. Therefore, we must be humble and vigilant, and not fall into the mentality of pride and oppression. And we should not be afraid of those who are of the flesh.

2. King Saul with no God in his heart (V11, 33)

Although Saul was the anointed king of Israel, he was a godless king. When Goliath came to challenge the Israelites, it was Saul who was most qualified to fight. However, because Saul had no god in his heart, Saul was terrified and frightened in front of the even bigger Goliath and lost his confidence and fighting spirit! Even the people of Israel were afraid, and no one dared to fight, and they were humiliated by Goliath for 40 days!

Saul’s failure was that he had God but did not know God and did not fear God in his heart. No matter how serious a sin is, it can be forgiven, but the sin of not knowing God cannot be forgiven, because you don’t know how to ask God for forgiveness! Saul's foolish failure is a stern warning to all, especially Christians!

3. David who truly trusted in God

(1) Unaffected by people (V26)

David arrived at the battlefield to greet his brothers but was misunderstood and accused by his brothers. Belittled by Saul, he was too young to defeat a giant warrior. Goliath even despised him and said that he would feed him to the birds. But David was not affected, he still stood up and fought for the living God.

(2) Have experience in the past (V33-35)

David looked back and realised that the same God who saved him in the past will save him now and in the future. Shepherding in the wilderness was God equipping David and giving him the experience of killing lions and bears.

(3) With confidence now (V36-40)

David is now confident that he will kill Goliath as he killed the lion and the bear. David didn't wear armour and weapons but only picked five stones and his action against Goliath is true faith!

(4) Relying on God to fight the giant (V41-51)

In the face of the great enemy, David had no fear and easily killed the giant Goliath with a stone and used Goliath's knife to cut off Goliath's head. David relied on the Lord Almighty!

We should imitate David, don't be afraid of being despised by others, don't be afraid of any environment and enemies, and be ready at any time to enter God's leading.

Conclusion:

We have seen Goliath who has no God in his sight, and Saul who has no God in his heart, are not as good as David, because David truly believed in God! If we truly trust God, no matter what circumstances or people we encounter, we must maintain joy and peace, and don't live in worry and fear! A person who truly trusts in God is also an overcomer!
