Hebrews 5: Jesus - the source of eternal salvation GK611 Morning Devotion

Speaker: Ps Daniel + Ps David Tan

Introduction:

This chapter talks about the Lord Jesus as the source of eternal salvation! Only through the Lord Jesus, the eternal high priest, can we enter the eternal kingdom of heaven.

1. The high priest of the world (V1-4)

(1) God selected from the world (V1)
God established the priest and high priest in the days of Moses. God chose Aaron to be the high priest and Aaron's family to be the priests.

People always look at others according to their own way; the ones chosen by God are those who can respond to God's call in their hearts!

(2) Handling the things of God for others (V1)
The high priest in the human world handles the things of God for people and saves souls. He represents people before God and brings our needs before God, especially offering gifts and sin offerings for people’s sins; he also represents God before people, bringing God’s grace and will to people, and saving people’s lives.

(3) Be sympathetic to the foolish and lost (V2-3)
A human high priest is not just a man who sacrifices animals. The high priest must be sympathetic to the foolish and the lost, for he knows that he too is beset by weakness. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest must first atone for himself and then offer the sacrifice of atonement out of love for the people.

(4) The high priest does not take the honour for himself (V4)
Aaron did not take it upon himself to be the high priest but was called by God and commanded Moses to appoint him. At that time, Korah and all his followers refused to accept. They wanted to glorify themselves, but they were judged by God.

2. The eternal high priest (V5-10)

(1) Son born of the Heavenly Father (V5)
The high priest in the world has a master-servant relationship with God, and the Lord Jesus has a father-son relationship with God. He is the high priest sent by God, and He did not fight for it by himself.

(2) According to the order of Melchizedek (V6)
Melchizedek has existed since the time of Abraham. He is a traditional priest of Israel. He has no beginning and no end, which means that he was sent by God. The scriptures say that the Lord Jesus will be a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek, which shows that the Lord was also sent by God to be the eternal High Priest.

(3) Complete obedience to the will of the Father (V7-10)
Christ prayed to God with weeping and tears before going to the cross. Although He is the Son of God, He is willing to go to the cross for us. In suffering, he showed obedience to God. He came to be a priest with a perfect life, and Jesus became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him!

This was a great reminder to people at that time. Because they originally followed Jesus, but when they were under pressure, they wanted to go back. Today is also a great reminder for us: Jesus is the source of eternal salvation! Only those who obey can gain it!

3. Pursue spiritual maturity (V11-14)

The author here warns those Christians who are“dull in hearing” that it is not only a pity but also a danger spiritually! Because one will misunderstand the teaching of the truth and go their own way! Therefore, I urge these Christians to pursue spiritual maturity, grow from drinking milk to eating solid food, become familiar with and live out the truth, distinguish between good and evil, and not be deceived.

Conclusion:

In this end time, there will be many sufferings. Are we willing to continue to follow God in the midst of suffering? If you continue to stick to your beliefs, it may be even harder, so are you still willing to obey?
Only those who closely follow and obey the Lord can gain the root of eternal salvation in Jesus!
