Jude: Keeping the true path and straying away

Speaker: Ps Deborah

1. Knowing our own identity (v1-3)

When we want to fight hard for the Truth, it is necessary for us to know our own identity first. When we know who we are called to be as God's children, we can stand in the right place and do the right thing. And know that we have the responsibility to defend the Truth. We can hold on to it even though we need to face hardship and persecution. For the Lord will keep what He invites, and will multiply mercy, peace, and love to us.

2. Recognising the Trickery of the Enemy (v4-16)

v5-10 Jude uses 3 Old Testament examples to warn believers of the sins to avoid. The first is the people of Israel who died in the wilderness because of their unbelief, and the second is the angels mentioned in Gen 6 who did not keep their position and committed adultery with the women of the world and were locked up to await the future judgment. Also the men of Sodom and Gomorrah, who wanted to commit adultery with the angels and were corrupted, would be punished by eternal fire.

V11 Cain, Balaam, and Korah were all serving God. Let us reflect our lives if we still have the shadows of these three people in our lives.

(1) Cain

Cain knew there was a God, but lived as if there was no God. He fell into the sin of jealousy, hatred, murder, and lying. Is our mindset in ministry to be affirmed and applauded by men? Do we believe that God is righteous when we encounter injustice? Or do we feel the injustice, so we rise up and take action to get justice.

(2) Balaam

Balaam disregarded God's warnings, pretending to be godly and falsely sold his God-given anointing and gifts as a way to gain profit. Have we ever not done things according to God's law for money or profit? Take legal loopholes?

(3) Korah

Korah disobeyed God's authority and caused divisions among the people, as a result of which the earth split open and was eaten alive and fell into the underworld.
Children, employees, team members: Do you often complain, contradict or judge the authority behind their backs?
Supervisors, leaders, group leaders: If you can't agree with what the authority is doing and can't overcome it yourself, don't challenge the authority. If you choose to leave, even more so, do not take away the staff or the Lord's sheep because you are dissatisfied with the authority.

3.Living out the Truth of the Most Holy (v17-23)

(1) Remembering the teaching of the apostles (v17-19)

False teachers are those who draw parties and create divisions in the church; they claim to have divine revelation, but are people without the Holy Spirit. They are good scoffers, and walk after their own ungodly selfish desires. We must always meditate on the Word of God, and, moreover, search and memorise it. That we may recognise false teachers.

(2) To edify ourselves in the Truth (v20a)

Not just knowing, but actually living out the Truth in action, constantly allowing our lives to be expanded and elevated. To make our lives bright and shine for the Lord.

(3) Praying in Tongues in the Spirit (v20b)

Tongues is one of the greatest and most powerful gifts God has given us. It not only strengthens our spiritual being, but also changes the spiritual atmosphere and is the key to the gift of transcendent revelation. Praying in tongues is the secret of initiating miracles, for it is the Holy Spirit who intercedes on our behalf according to the will of God.

(4) Keep always in the love of God (v21)

If we want to live the Truth, we must keep ourselves always in the love of God, so that we can rely on the Lord's mercy to get back up again when we are weak or fallen. In addition, we are really lacking in love as human beings. If we do not keep ourselves always in God's love, it is difficult for us to love one another, and even more impossible to love the unlovable. It is also easy to treat others with the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

(5) Mercy Rescues the Weak (v22-23)

A doubting person wanders between Truth and falsehood, and needs a patient member who is good at teaching, and who will redeem him with a tender heart. Those who have lost sight of the Truth need someone to speak to them straightforwardly and snatch them out of the fire. Finally, if we want to redeem our brothers who have fallen into heresy, we must first have a fearful heart toward God, toward judgment, and toward sin. Do not look at yourself more than you should, lest you be tempted to fall and sacrifice the Truth for love.

Conclusion: Jesus Alone (v24-25)

Apart from the Lord we are nothing and can do nothing. Jude said that only with Jesus can we stand before the Lord of glory on the Day of Judgment without blemish and with joy. Therefore we must cling to our Saviour. He alone, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, has the power to keep us from straying away and to bring us to perfection. Amen! Let us worship the one true God, who was, is, and will be forever and ever!
