a)真理

Deuteronomy 31: Rise up the Successor
GK611 Morning Devotion
24/11/2022
Speaker: Ps Deborah + Rev Tan

Introduction: Lost

As time goes by, many traditional delicacies, crafts, industries, etc., due to a lack of successors cannot be continued and are eventually lost.

I. Prepare strong successors (v1-8)

1. Prepare the successor selflessly (v1-3)

God did not fulfil Moses' desire to set foot on the Promised land. Not only did Moses not complain about God, but he fulfilled his final responsibility wholeheartedly; he selflessly strengthened and perfected his successor, Joshua. He also constantly stimulates the people's faith in God and encourages them to go and inherit the promise. This is the quality of life that a leader should have. Let the new generation of successors step on their shoulders and continue to build upon them.

2. Motivate to walk with God (v4-6)

Moses encouraged the people to be strong and courageous because the battle in the Promised Land belongs to God, so they must walk closely with God. Whenever life's storms arise, don't move ahead with your flesh. If we know how to hide in God's presence, we will be able to understand God's will and control the storm.

3. Keep up with authority and be honoured (v7-8)

Joshua was chosen as the successor and called by Moses to be honoured in front of Israel because he believed that Moses was his authority and followed him closely. As a successor, it is very important to have the determination to keep up and follow. The church follows the Holy Spirit, and the cell group leader should lead the cell group members to follow the church. Don't choose to accommodate because you are afraid that the team members will leave. This will not only fail to build up the team members’ lives but will also be led by their noses.

II. The teaching of the law is not lost (v9-13)

Moses commanded that every Sabbath year’s Feast of Tabernacles, the priests and all the elders should repeat the law to all the people living in the Promised Land so that they would learn to keep it, obey it, and maintain a heart of reverence for God.

Every Christian is the successor of God's Word and has the responsibility to faithfully pass it on to the new generation of successors. Therefore, we not only strive to pursue the Word of God, but also faithfully teach it so that it will not be lost, and so that many people will be blessed for generations because of listening to the truth.

III. Prepare lamentations for warning (v14-29)

God asked Moses to compose a lament in advance to testify against the people of Israel. Lamentations also remind us:

1. Avoid the desire for food, clothing and lust (v20-22)

V20 God said that the Israelites have eaten and filled themselves and grown fat, then they will turn to other gods and serve them; and they will provoke Him and break His covenant. Just like Noah, after escaping the devastating flood of the earth, he got drunk and indirectly brought disaster to his family. King David also committed adultery and murder when he was in peace. So, when life doesn't encounter oppression or challenge, don't take it lightly. Instead, be more vigilant lest you fall into the trap of the evil one.

2. Keep faith and never give up (v23)

God let Joshua know in advance that the people of Israel would betray him, which was also a test of faith for Joshua. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the people will continue to rebel. Faced with such stubborn people, will Joshua still believe in God and faithfully lead them to obtain the land as an inheritance? Let us not focus on circumstances and difficulties in our adversity. We must grasp the vision or promise given by God, don't give up lightly, and believe that a breakthrough is not far away.

3. Connect with God and be faithful to God (v24-29)

a) Truth

v24 said that Moses gave the Book of the Law to the Levites and ordered them to put the Book of the Law next to the ark of God to testify against the Israelites; the Book of the Law was designated to be placed beside the ark of God, the purpose is to allow the Israelites to come before God often, to let the truth of God shine, and to testify against them, so that their lives can be aligned with God and connected with God.

b) True relationship

As leaders, we must bring people before God, let them connect with God, and establish a real relationship with God. In this way, even if we are gone, God is still their God, and their faith will not be shaken.

c) True behaviour

God's laws and regulations are not kept for others, nor are they for people to see. Even if no one is watching, what we do must still be faithful and walk in truth. Because we are not doing it for people to see, but for the Lord. Never break the law just because no one is seeing it.

Conclusion: Building a Team

As the Chinese idiom says the new people will perform better than the seniors and I hope that brothers and sisters can join different ministries and be equipped together. Let every ministry has a volunteer team, prepare a new generation of successors, pass on from generation to generation, and expand the kingdom of God together!
