Deuteronomy 32: The Song of Moses

Introduction:

The 'Song of Moses' is a spiritual song prepared by God for future generations, so that when God's people fall into disobedience and failure, they can recall God's teaching and grace and turn back to the God of grace!

1. Sing praises to a gracious God (V1-14)

(1) God the Father bought and redeemed His people (v1-9)

God's true purpose in asking Moses to write this song was not merely to rebuke, but to revive the spirit of God's people. They were to understand that God is ever reliable and faithful as a rock, and that although God's people acted wickedly toward Him, the loving Father redeemed them from their sins, and rebuilt them.

Salvation is freely given, and we who have been saved should preach at all times and in all places, so that the unsaved may receive the benefits of the gospel together!

(2) God protects and guides the people (V10-14)

Here God's deep love for His people is shown, as He surrounded, watched over, and protected them in the wilderness! And leads them alone into the fullness. God is so gracious to us: He finds us, protects us, guides us, and gives us an abundant lives!

2. Warn people not to rebel against God (V15-43)

(1) To anger God by forgetting His grace and forsaking Him (V15-21)

When God's people are blessed, but they turn away from God and anger God who has been waiting patiently for them to turn back, God's severe discipline will come upon them!

(2) The discipline for rebellion against God (V22-34)

When God's people turn away from Him, He imposes severe discipline. God does not want to mistreat His people, but He wants to show them through discipline that the false gods they have turned to will not save them, but will cause them to be corrupted and judged!

Another purpose of God's discipline of His people is to awaken them to what has happened to them and to think about their end!

(3) There is no other God beside Jehovah (V35-43)

This last passage of the Song of Moses shows us that God made the people suffer in order to make them understand that there is no other God beside Jehovah! Although God's discipline is thorough, God's salvation is also complete and thorough, enabling the people to experience God's love again and bringing them back to God's grace.

3. The Discipline and Testimony of Moses (V44-52)

Here Moses left his last words, telling the people that God's law was not vain, not only was it not irrelevant to them, but it was actually a matter of life and death for them!

(1) The Last Exhortation of Moses (V44-47)

Here Moses left his last words, telling the people that God's law was not vain, not only was it not irrelevant to them, but it was actually a matter of life and death for them!

(2) The testimony of Moses' life (V48-52)

This last passage records that God told Moses to climb the mountain, but he could only see but not enter the Promised Land, because in the wilderness God asked Moses to command the rock to bring forth water, but Moses took his staff and struck the rock to bring forth water, thus offending God by not honouring Him as holy.

But Moses' experience became a warning to future generations to remember that God is not to be taken lightly! Leaders like Moses also will be punished for their sins!

Conclusion:

May we take from the Song of Moses and remember: whether a person will be blessed, will prosper, and to have long days, lies in keeping the commandments of God!

May we also leave behind a song of life: to be a blessing to future generations! Inspire them to fear and love God!
