Deuteronomy 21: A Just And Righteous Mode Of Living

Speaker: IP Moses Ou + Rev David Tan
Introduction:
Psalm 89:14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face.
1. Handling Suspicious Murders (V1-9)
In the face of a suspicious murder, When confronted with the suspicion of murder, the leader of the nearest city in Israel had to come forward to atone for the death of the dead body with a calf that had not been yoked, and to show the innocence of the people of their city. In this way, the Levites blessed them and said that the sin of keeping the blood of the innocent would not be imputed to them. Today, as Christians in Singapore, we are to take up our priestly authority to atone for Singapore's sins and to pronounce a blessing on Singapore.
2. Marry the Captive Women (V10-14)
If the people of Israel were to marry a non-Canaanite woman who had been taken captive in the war, they were to make sure that they would be willing to naturalise into the Jewish nation. If they are not pleased with her in the future, they are to make amends and let her go again. This means that such a woman also has dignity, and God does not want the people of Israel to treat her badly.
3. Don't Waste the Firstborn with Personal Love (V15-17)
Under God's fair law, the male children of Israel were not to change the order of their firstborn sons because of a preference for one wife.
4. Treatment of Disobedient Sons (V18-21)
Under the standard of the law, all rebellious sons who disobeyed their parents were to be put to death. Today Jesus Christ has redeemed us from condemnation and death under the law by going beyond the law. However, God's heart has not changed, and it is His desire that we all come to be obedient.
5. Hanging a Corpse Without a Night (V22-23)
Although a person who has committed a capital crime and is put to death will be hung on a log as a warning to the living, he must be taken down the same day and buried, lest he defile the promised land that God has given to the people.
Conclusion:
Today Jesus Christ redeems us so that we no longer live under the law, yet the law of justice under God's statutes and regulations has not changed. He desires that His people be just and righteous, respecting each and every one of God's creatures, and not deviating from justice in all matters through partiality.
