Deuteronomy 5: God Makes A Covenant with The People

Speaker: IP Moses Ou

Introduction:

When we talk about making a covenant in our daily life, we often think of contracts. The reason why we have contracts is that we need them to protect our benefit so that those rights that belong to us are not violated.

The covenant most often mentioned in the Bible is the covenant God makes with us, but this covenant is not a guarantee that the God who makes the covenant with us cannot infringe upon our interests, but that God takes the initiative to reward us with the best blessings, so He makes the covenant with us and He expects us to live in it all the time!

1. God Made a Covenant With the People at Mount Horeb

(1) The covenant of loving God (V1-11)

God made a covenant with the people on Mount Horeb, so that the people could first learn how to love and fear God through the first three commandments of the Ten Commandments.

(2) The covenant of rest (V12-15)

Coming to the second part of the Ten Commandments (the 4th commandment), God made a covenant of rest with the people so that they could truly experience that God, the Father, would provide for them in abundance.

(3) The covenant of loving people (V16-21)

Coming to the third part of the Ten Commandments (commandments 5 to 10), God makes a covenant with the people to love people so that they can learn to love people and experience the blessings in the harmony that comes from having love for people.

2. The People Asked Moses to Deliver a Message For Them (V22-27)

In this covenant process, in fact, the people saw how great and holy God was in such a supernatural setting, and how defiled they were, so they were in awe, and asked Moses to be their intercessor between God and man. They also showed that they were willing to be careful to do what God commanded them in this covenant. But through history we see that they did not keep what they said at that time, which is a lesson for our history.

3. God Promises and Expects the People to Keep the Covenant (V28-33)

Finally, God answered the people's request for intercession and expected them to keep the covenant as they said they would, so that they and their children's children would be blessed forever!

Conclusion:

On Mount Horeb, God had made a covenant with the people of Israel so that they could live a blessed life of loving God and loving people and enjoying rest! And in this experience of God's very supernatural encounter with them at that time, the people of Israel were in great fear of God, and they saw how unclean and unworthy they were, so they expressed their willingness to hear God's commands, but they needed a mediator to deliver the Word for them.

The faithful God answered their prayers, and expected the people to keep the covenant with this honour. But we see in history that things did not go this way. The people of Israel rebelled many times, and then experienced God's salvation many times, and this becomes a historical lesson for all of us in God's people today!
