Deuteronomy 3: Battle Victory Depends on God

Speaker: Ps Stella

The Lord wanted to make his people understand that even though the enemy is mighty and superior in every way to the Israelites, they had to fear the Israelites. Because God wanted to help and lead the Israelites to overcome all their enemies.

I. Appease the fears of the People (v1-11)

Thirty-eight years ago, Moses exhorted the people not to be afraid, but the people of the old generation were still afraid, and they lost their chance to enter the Promised Land. Therefore, God deliberately led the people to go north to fight the giant, King Og of Bashan, in order to remove the shadow left by the giants of the Anak clan in their hearts, to deal with the fear in the hearts of the people, so that the people of the new generation could keep up with faith and know that as long as God said to take the enemy into own hands and He will take care of the battle for the people.

II. Fighting together to experience God (v12-22)

1. Get the land first (v12-17)

Moses divided the land of Sihon king of Heshbon in the south to the tribe of Reuben, the land of Og King of Bashan in the north to the half tribe of Manasseh, and the land of Gilead in the middle bridge to the tribe of Gad, so there are two and a half tribes gotten the land east of the Jordan River. This was in response to the previous request of the tribes of Gad and Reuben to stay on the east side of the Jordan, and God granted them.

2. Fighting together (v18-22)

The battle did not stop because Israel began to gain the land. God wants them to fight together to experience Him, so all wars are fought together by the twelve tribes. When the half-tribe of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh had acquired the land, Moses still commanded them to rise up and fight with their brethren.

Today, God wants to give us an opportunity to experience God and grow our life when we served, not only to gain Christ but also to be gained by Christ.

III. God’s promises will be fulfilled (v23-29)

God sent Moses to lead the people out of Egypt. But because of Moses' fault, he could not enter the Promised Land, so God raised up Joshua to lead the people into Canaan. Although the leader has changed, God’s plan remains the same, and His promises will surely be fulfilled.

Nothing can stop God's promises!

Conclusion:

Faced with such a strong and well-trained army of King Sihon of Heshbon and Og of Bashan, the Israelites seemed to be difficult to win, but in the end, they were able to defeat their enemies because God fought for them.

Today, we may be fighting against as powerful an enemy as the Israelites faced in the past. But as long as we fully trust and submit to God's leading, He promises not only to fight by our side but to make us more than victorious.
