Isaiah 42: What kind of servant are you?

Introduction: Sima Guang and Lu Zhi

I. God's Well-Pleasing Servant (V1-17)

1. Traits of a God's Servant (V1-4)

First, God's servant has a very close relationship with God. In addition to being chosen and supported by God and pleasing to God, God even gave him His own Spirit, so that he could be filled with the Holy Spirit and be empowered to accomplish the arduous task God entrusted to him, which is to proclaim His salvation to all nations. Second, he doesn't make a fuss. Humility is not self-proclaimed, self-publicised. Instead, use God-given talents, gifts, money, and time to help those who are oppressed, helpless, and broken-hearted, and lead them to salvation. Finally, in the face of adversity and persecution, do not lose heart or be afraid, because he knows that God can do everything and is faithful and reliable.

2. The Mission of God's Servant (V5-17)

(1) To be a light to the Gentiles (V5-7)

God, who created the heavens and the earth and gave life and breath, called His servants to be the advocate of the people (advocate: the original is covenant). Jesus Christ is the covenant between us and God that binds us to God. Let us cherish this covenant rope that is filled with full of God's love. Take up the authority given by God, follow the example of the Lord Jesus to be the light of the Gentiles, and become the advocate between man and God. Lead man to be bound together with God and restore God's original glorious purpose in creating man.

(2) Do new things and sing new songs (V8-12)

God is a God who does new things every day. When a man is in a difficult situation, if he knows how to turn to God, he will surely experience new things that God has done for him, and he will be able to sing new songs to God from his heart. As God's servants, we need to yearn for God to accomplish the new things He wants to do through us. Let the world come together to sing a new song to the LORD and praise him from the end of the earth! Do not give false gods or idols the glory that God deserves.

(3) Trust in God and it shall be done (V13-17)

Out of God's faithful nature, if He calls us, He will take responsibility to the end, and He will personally lead us to fulfil the mission He has entrusted to us. And as God's well-pleasing servants, we must trust God, be vigilant at all times, and be open to the work of the Holy Spirit. Because God wants to unexpectedly turn us from being silent to shouting loudly, like a woman in childbirth, in the midst of shouting, giving birth to a new life in victory! Yesterday, in chapter 41 verse 15, we received a new tool to become a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth. Let us take the new anointing of the Holy Spirit to give birth to many new lives in the kingdom of God, so that the island and its residents will come and sing a new song to the LORD, praise him from the ends of the earth.

II. God's Reproached Servant (V18-25)

Israel, God's servant, was chosen by God to witness and glorify Him among the nations. But God rebuked them for being blind and deaf. The heart is closed, and it is completely unable to understand the will of God. What caused God's servants to become deaf and blind?

1. Rebellion and unrepentant (V18-20)

From the history of Israel, we know that the reason why they fell to the point of deafness and blindness was that they were spiritually blinded as they sinned against God and did not repent. So, keep a life that is sensitive to sin and that is always repentant.

2. Numbness leads to the death of the spirit (V21-25)

When people are blinded by sin, they will feel numb and indifferent to what is going on around them, leading to spiritual destruction. Even if God's discipline poured on him with fierce anger and fighting courage, it was so sad that he didn't even know it, and he didn't mind being burned by fire. Don't underestimate something that goes against the truth, or is indifferent to what God has commanded, numbness or small compromises are like slow-cooking a frog when realised it may be too late.

Conclusion: What would you choose?

Avoid disobedience, unrepentant, numbness which leads to the death of the spirit.

Imitate the Lord Jesus, live out the characteristics of life that a servant should have, become a light to the Gentiles, and lead people to Christ. Be a servant whom God pleases.
