Isaiah 21

Introduction:

There are three divine revelations in this chapter. We need to reflect on whether we can fully trust the sovereign God with His revelation.

I. The Fall of Babylon: All idols were smashed (V1-10)

1. The prophet receives tragic vision (V1-4)

The vision that the prophet Isaiah received was that a great slaughter would come to destroy Babylon, hence the prophet was shocked and distressed when he saw it! We as Christians do not gloat when the enemy is destroyed. Even though we know that it is God’s judgment, we will still feel sad.

2. The Prophet speaks the ending of the fall (V5-10)

The prophet saw that Babylon, though powerful, would eventually perish. Not only will the wicked Babylon collapses in the end, but all the idols will be smashed to pieces.

In today’s world, many people have their own idols. Although they do not worship gods, they still have their own idols in their hearts: material things, power, beauty, and there are many idols that cannot be thrown away. If we were to live among such idols, we would perish with them!

II. Edom's Suffering: Always in the Darkness (V11-12)

As for the vision of Edom, it exemplifies the dark future of Edom. If one doesn't turn back, repent and seek God, even if there is a short period of peace, one will suffer again, and will always be in dark time!

Many people today, like Edom, regard God as one of the idols for seeking help, and if they don't get an answer right away, they turn to other idols and never come back. They only care about their own future, not God's will. In fact, God wants to test and strengthen our faith through problems and difficulties, and God will eventually open a way out for us.

III. The demise of Arabia: All the glory is gone (V13-17)

As for the vision of Arabia, when it comes to Dedan, Tima, and Kedar, they are all tribal cities in Arabia. When the Assyrians invaded, they relied on each other to help each other, completely ignoring the God who is in control, as such, they could not escape from doomed in the end, and all glory was lost within a year.

If we rely solely on our own intelligence and ability to solve problems, we are relying on the glory of men, and the result is that we cannot protect ourselves and our ‘glory’ will be lost. This was because we ignore that our future is completely under God's control! When we truly trust God, we must give glory to God and do what God tells us to do!

Conclusion:

The nations are judged by God's revelation. Today we must reflect on the fact that no matter whether Babylon, Edom or Arabia, they will be unable to defend themselves when under attack. Therefore, all alliances that abandon God are unreliable, and only God is truly dependable! It also reminds us that no matter whether the future is known or unknown, only God is in control of our tomorrow and can lead us to the light in the dark world!
